Job Summary

The College of Medicine is seeking postdoctoral fellows to join our efforts to investigate molecular mechanisms, diagnostics, treatments, and prevention strategies with respect to immunologic, neurologic, oncogenic, and respiratory diseases caused by herpesviruses, retroviruses (including HIV-1 and HTLV-1), as well as the causative agent of COVID-19, SARS-Cov-2 and other viruses including influenza virus.

Essential Functions
  • Basic and translational research studies utilizing basic immunologic strategies and immunotherapies, molecular biology, and virology technologies as well as systems biology approaches and bioinformatics to prevent, treat, and cure deadly virologic infections and diseases.
  • There is also heavy emphasis on experimental therapeutics and drug development. Central to these experimental approaches are the use of innovative in vitro 2D and 3D cell cultures systems, ex vivo virus-infected tissue culture systems, humanized mice transplanted with virus-infected target cell populations, as well as clinical cohort patience populations.
  • We are also focused on the utilization of CRISPR technologies and numerous bioinformatic algorithms to examine functional properties of viral genomes and the inactivation/cure of virus-infected cells (particularly HIV quasispecies), in HIV-1 infection and disease models.
  • Writing manuscripts, applying for independent fellowship grants, independent and collaborative research grants strongly encouraged.
  • Opportunities to attend national and international scientific conferences to present innovative and impactful research findings will be promoted and supported.
  • The Department and Institute have a strong track record with respect to nurturing and developing early career postdoctoral fellows and faculty into strong well-funded mid-career and senior biomedical scientists.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD or MD/PhD with a strong knowledge base in one or more of the following areas: (a) Molecular Biology (gene cloning, PCR, chromatin immunoprecipitation, western blot); (b) Virology (viral infection, titration, propagation); (c) Cell Biology (eukaryotic cell culture, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy); (d) Gene Delivery (nucleofection, lipofection, viral transduction).
  • The position requires a driven, motivated, and enthusiastic individual.
  • The selected candidate must be team-oriented, collaborative, able to work independently, and have excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • New PhD graduates or postdoctoral fellows with advanced standing are encouraged to apply.
