Position Summary:
The Assistant Director for Student Support provides front-line case coordination and support navigation for those students navigating a range of personal, family, academic, and other challenging situations. They will work with a team of professionals in both Student Affairs and other departments to help implement the variety of resources and support mechanisms the University offers to its students. Their work will both involve connecting students to existing resources and providing 1:1 support and guidance to students who are struggling at Puget Sound. This position will particularly work with colleagues in the Dean of Students' Office; Academic Advising; Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services; and the University Chaplaincy.
In addition to this student-facing, collegial work, the Assistant Director will also be responsible to lead ongoing coordination (with student staff) of a variety of “direct student services” - resources that currently include the Campus Food Pantry, Dining Dollars Donation Program, Lending Library, and Clothing Closet. As time permits, additional tasks and projects may develop in consultation with Divisional leadership and the particular skills and interests of the Assistant Director.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Direct Student Support (80%)
- Provides in-person, front-line case coordination for students experiencing challenges at Puget Sound.
- Participate as a member of the Student Alert Group.
- Connect with students for individual support and engagement in collaboration with the Student Alert Group (and other Student Support/Student Success mechanisms on campus).
- Appropriately refer and guide students to other appropriate on-campus resources as necessary.
- Partner with the Student Care Coordinator to help connect students with off-campus resources.
- Partner with Academic Advising to support or direct the process for various types of leave/withdrawal.
- Partner with the University Chaplain to support the process for Bereavement Leave.
- Partner with the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity to maximize and coordinate support for minoritized and underrepresented students.
- Develop print and online resources to educate students, faculty, and staff about student support resources within the Division of Student Affairs.
Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise or co-supervise student staff
working in the department, particularly in relation to Direct
Student Services.
Budget Responsibilities
- Budget for Direct Student Support Services (less than $5,000)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required
- Master's degree in Social Work, Human Resources, Communications, Higher Education Administration, or similar fields focused on support and resource coordination preferred. Experience with case management or support resource coordination skills highly preferred Experience, comfort, and commitment to working equitably with students, faculty, and staff from a variety of backgrounds different than one's own; ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community. Very strong listening and empathy skills Desire to grow into an evolving position Experience and comfort in supporting students in crisis Ability to engage constructively with students facing challenging situations Ability to advise students both individually and in group settings Strong collaboration skills Ability to set, maintain, and actively manage healthy boundaries Ability to critically review sensitive information and prioritize outreach and action steps Ability to speak and present in front of groups Ability to think and plan creatively Ability to manage and prioritize a range of ongoing and short-term tasks and projects Fluent in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite Ability to develop training and educational programs for a variety of audiences
