Assistant Director supports a sustainable, dynamic experiential learning academic initiative, including community-based service learning, research, & academic projects/programs, while reporting directly to associate vice president for engagement & director.

This positions serves as a community engagement practitioner: facilitating & nurturing sustainable campus-community partnerships, consulting with faculty/academic programs and projects, focusing on developing experiential learning curricula; managing the community placements for service learning/community based research/engagement projects; managing evaluation & data-gathering processes; & providing current research-based pedagogy and learning resources to faculty.

This position supports the University’s mission and identified priorities of increased student recruitment, retention, shared competencies development, application of research, & interdisciplinary collaboration; accomplished through sustainable, strategic partnerships, supervision and leadership, resource management, and consultation with Syracuse University students, faculty, staff, and myriad community partners.

Shaw Center is an academic, all-University experiential learning center for students that functions as a living-learning classroom. Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in education/civic engagement/public policy or related field.
  • Minimum of three to five years experience with college/university environments in general, community engagement/service learning in particular required.
  • Experience in urban communities is essential; familiarity with the greater Syracuse community preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the importance of institutional relationship building between the Center and diverse constituencies.
  • Demonstrated comfort level working and communicating effectively with college-aged staff, as well as all categories of internal and external partners.
  • In-depth experience collaboratively designing experiential learning curricula; knowledge of pedagogy and best practices.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Polished public speaking and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Access, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Word) required; experience with Campus Labs, Blackboard, and PeopleSoft desired.
Responsibilities
Serves as a liaison to community organizations & constituents to meet departmental goals and program requirements. Provide collaborative leadership through coaching and development of sustainable, comprehensive experiential learning initiatives, projects, courses, and academic discoveries in partnership with faculty, academic programs, and departments across campus, through partnerships with community organizations. Develop, support, & assess the impact of these opportunities through team leadership that demonstrates organizational & community understanding.

Provide expertise and consultation to the development of emerging innovative academic community-based initiatives directly related to specific departments and in collaboration with chairs, associate deans, faculty, and community partners. This process is modeled on the four, nationally recognized community-based nutrition initiatives now in place at the Shaw Center, and appropriate best practices. Consult with faculty to support 30 to 40 service-learning courses annually, providing organizational management support and community innovation in developing course placements through appropriate orientation, pedagogy development, and implementation.

Oversee approximately 400 service-learning students each academic year; hire, train, supervise, coach, and develop seven Shaw Center intern employees who lead and/or support experiential learning courses and initiatives, cultivating students’ personal, professional, and social development. Develop and foster partnerships among campus and community members and organizations; identify resource needs and areas for collaboration to meet complex student learning and community development needs.

Maintain relationships between Shaw Center and academic departments to ensure experiential learning aligns with research and other academic priorities. Collaborate and consult with appropriate University colleagues – advancement, deans, faulty, to pursue, obtain, and manage resources (human, financial, material) to meet needs of academic engagement initiatives. Coordinate, assess, and indirectly supervise one AmeriCorps New York Campus Compact VISTA .

Consult with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to explore, develop, pilot, and implement interdisciplinary and scholarly initiatives that address societal challenges, needs, and opportunities. Make sure to align opportunities to University’s mission, as well as specific academic program and/or course learning goals. This responsibility requires maintaining community relationships and an insight understanding of local, regional, national, and global societal needs that afford connections and opportunities for the University.

Resource development and management are essential to developing, testing, implementing, and assessing academic initiatives, and require working with appropriate campus partners to achieve results. Including students in this process requires coaching and mentoring together with institutional understanding.

Coordinate Transportation in conjunction with Administrative Coordinator; coach 5-7 student employees in scheduling, problem-solving, and administrative tasks; collaborate with campus partners and community organizations to ensure safe and appropriate transport of students into the community.
