Position Summary:
This is a continuing, tenure-track Assistant Professor position with joint appointment in the School of Education and the Department of Languages, Cultures, and International Trade, in the College of Liberal Arts, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The tenure home will be in the School of Education. Appointment is on a nine-month academic year basis. An additional summer session appointment may be possible. Progress in rank will require demonstration of productivity in research and publication, teaching, and service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership for the foreign language education program,
- Serve as lead curricular liaison between the School of Education and the Department of Languages, Cultures, and International Trade, ensuring that curriculum is aligned with ISBE and ACTFL CAEP standards;
- Provide leadership for the development and administration of the academic degrees and licensure programs in foreign language education;
- Write program assessment reports;
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses including two courses (a second to be developed) in methods of foreign language instruction;
- Conduct research resulting in publications in peer-reviewed journals;
- Recruit, advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the German and Spanish education programs, and serve on thesis and dissertation committees;
- Participate in and develop outreach programs;
- Bring German and Spanish education programs to national prominence;
- Serve the public and constituencies of the departments, colleges, and university; and,
- Provide significant synergy for collaboration within and among departments in the School of Education and the College of Liberal Arts.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, or related field. ABD applicants will be considered if all requirements for the PhD will be completed by August 15, 2022. If all requirements for the doctorate have not been completed by that date, a one-year, term, non-tenure-track appointment at the rank of Instructor may be offered in accordance with University policy (http://policies.siu.edu/personnel-policies/chapter2/ch2-faps/conting.php).
Potential to develop a strong program of individual scholarship;
Teaching experience in a foreign or second language;
Commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in German, Spanish or another language.
