The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor that will begin on August 22, 2022. This is a full time, 9 month position. The successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities in a variety of our lecture and laboratory courses in either mechanical engineering (e.g., Dynamics and Controls, Sensors, Kinematics and Mechatronics, Thermal Sciences, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Manufacturing processes, Material Science, or Machine Design) or industrial engineering (e.g., Human Factors, Systems Safety, Manufacturing Systems Design, Production Planning and Management, Operations Research, Data Science, Facility Layout, Simulation, Lean Manufacturing, or Supply Chain). The successful applicant is expected to establish a collaborative, externally funded and nationally recognized research program that engages students. They are also expected to contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring, while supporting diversity and inclusion and a commitment to justice.  Service to the Department, College, and University is also expected. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or a closely related engineering field by July 1, 2022. A candidate with two or more years of engineering related industrial experience and/or two or more years of college or university teaching experience is preferred. Please see https://z.umn.edu/scsecareers for more information.

The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department has a history of providing hands-on experiences to our students through both lab courses and student clubs, providing undergraduate research opportunities, and serving local and regional industry through both capstone design projects and graduate placement. The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) and the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). The Department also offers two graduate degree programs: the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the Master of Environmental Health and Safety. Department faculty have the opportunity to affiliate with other M.S. and Ph.D programs such as the Water Resources Science and the Advanced Materials Sciences programs. There are also opportunities for affiliations with the Natural Resources Research Institute, the Large Lakes Observatory, and the Advanced Materials Center.
