The College of Fine Arts at Florida State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Art History at the rank of Full Professor. This is a nine-month faculty appointment with an additional summer administrative appointment.

The Chair of Art History will provide innovative and inspiring leadership, work with faculty to develop and advance a strategic vision for the Department, and demonstrate the ability to embody, support, and convey our mission of teaching, research, and service to varying audiences. The ideal candidate will be a compassionate and innovative leader and educator with the desire and experience to cultivate a dynamic program in collaboration and consultation with Department faculty and staff, particularly in the following areas:

  • Advocate and serve as spokesperson for the Department of Art History and College of Fine Arts within and outside of the Florida State community.
  • Represent the Department of Art History before and in collaboration with the administrative team and academic leaders of the College of Fine Arts in support of the unit’s overall mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Serve as principal administrative, academic, and financial officer of the Department. Work with professional business staff to develop and authorize annual budgets and expenditures while adhering to best fiscal practices at all times.
  • Provide ongoing leadership in research, teaching, service, and learning. Observe and mentor Department members regarding student engagement, instruction, funding opportunities, and professional development.
  • Facilitate the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, staff, and students, exemplify the values of inclusiveness, multicultural competency, and social justice, and cultivate a departmental culture that promotes respect, responsibility, and trust to create an environment in which diverse faculty, staff, and students thrive.
  • Contribute to the educational mission of the Department by teaching one undergraduate course and one graduate seminar each academic year.

The successful candidate will:

  • Possess a Ph.D. in Art History and/or related discipline with a strong record of promoting high quality teaching, research, and service.
  • Hold credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of Full Professor.
  • Present a strong record of effective leadership and management of multidisciplinary programs and people utilizing clear communication, appropriate delegation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate a proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice that creates an environment where diverse faculty, staff, and students thrive.

The Department of Art History is one of the oldest and highest ranked in the Southeast. The first in Florida to offer a doctoral degree, it boasts over 50 years of graduate education. The program consists of four major degrees (BA, MA, and PhD in Art History, and MA in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies) and one minor area (Museum Studies). Together with strengths in traditional areas of Western Art History, the Department has developed dynamic, novel programming in the hemispheric study of the Americas and in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies, which now accounts for a third of the Department’s graduate enrollment. Ten full-time faculty members teach at all levels and represent a broad range of subject areas and critical methodologies.

The Department’s faculty have a strong record of publication and external funding, with awards from the Fulbright Program, ACLS, and NEH, among others. As a Research 1 institution, FSU supports faculty research at the highest level and allocates funds for research and conference travel. Additional competitive internal funding is available through FSU’s Council on Research & Creativity. Faculty also have the option of teaching abroad during the summer through the University’s International Programs.   

Opportunities for students of art history at FSU extend well beyond the classroom. A distinguished lecture series brings national and international scholars to campus. Since 1981, the Department has hosted an annual graduate student symposium, with proceedings published in the journal Athanor. The program in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies and minor in Museum Studies provide theoretical and practical training for arts professionals, including student-curated exhibitions, fieldwork, and internships with major state agencies, archaeological sites, and museums, including the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. FSU’s global network of study abroad centers offer students opportunities for directed study in London, Paris, Florence, and Valencia.
