Located in Winston Salem, UNCSA is a conservatory-style school and one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina system. The university community consists of more than 1,200 students ranging from middle school to graduate school. The school of Design & Production is one of the five collegiate level training programs (along with Drama, Dance, Music and Film). The school has 367 students, 32 full time faculty and 12 adjuncts. Scene Design is an undergraduate and graduate program, with about 30 students currently enrolled, and one of 12 different concentrations offered by the School of Design & Production. Students serve as designers on productions in Drama, Dance and Music, as well as campus and outside community events. The three full time faculty in the Scene Design program work closely with the students to ensure their educational progress, both in the classroom and the production environment, while also maintaining professional design activities outside of the institution. 

Description of Responsibilities and Duties

  • Teach courses in the graduate and undergraduate Scene Design programs 
  • Mentor and supervise Scene Design student assignments and art activities
  • Participate with faculty in curriculum planning and operations of the Scene Design department
  • Assist in the admissions process by interviewing and recruiting prospective students 
  • Continued professional activity within the entertainment industry
  • Active participation in shared governance of the University community through service to the program, school and institution
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Design and Production

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline OR an equivalent combination of professional experience and education. 
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in theatrical and performance design
  • Evidence of work that incorporates and supports diverse identities and voices
  • Evidence of potential for a high quality of teaching

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the classroom and/or mentoring of early career scene designers
  • Experience using industry established digital programs alongside analog tools and techniques
  • Experience beyond theatrical design in additional areas such as themed entertainment, film, immersive events, etc.

Salary Range

Assistant/Associate Professor $65,000 - $80,000; Full Professor $80,000 - $90,000

UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure. This is a full-time position to begin August 2022.
