Position Summary:
Job Summary The Assistant Director of Sustainability provides oversight and coordination of university sustainability initiatives and student co-curricular sustainability activities, in accordance with Susquehanna University's strategic plan sustainability goals. The Assistant Director of Sustainability works collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and community members to advance sustainable practices and knowledge on campus and in the surrounding community. This position reports to the Director of the Center for Environmental Education and Research (CEER), with close collaboration from Facilities Management and Student Life. Specific Responsibilities
  • Integrate sustainability across the University's operations, curriculum, and co-curricular programs to foster a culture of sustainability.
  • Develop, promote, and implement effective student-centered, education and/or service oriented, co-curricular sustainability programming that addresses campus and local community needs. Programming should address food, recycling and waste minimization, energy and water use, composting, and procurement at a minimum.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across campus, including but not limited to Facilities Management and Student Life, on sustainability programming.
  • Oversee the AASHE STARS report submission and direct sustainability efforts to increase Susquehanna University's STARS rating.
  • Serve as the Chair for the University Committee on Sustainability to achieve the sustainability goals described in the University's strategic plan.
  • Promote the inclusion of sustainability content in existing and new academic courses.
  • Teach 1-2 sustainability-focused courses per year, as needed.
  • Supervise and mentor paid and volunteer student positions supporting sustainability programs.
  • Manage the campus garden and its student employees.
  • Publicize, promote, and communicate campus sustainability efforts and practices through social media, presentations, newsletters, and other publications as appropriate.
  • Seek external opportunities to increase the visibility of SU's sustainability program.
  • Organize academic year and summer educational seminars, discussions, workshops, and/or camps on sustainability topics.
  • Seek and apply for external funding opportunities to support SU's sustainability efforts.
  • Serve as the advisor to student clubs as needed.

    Required Qualifications:
    Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesKnowledge and understanding of sustainable practices and how they relate to college campuses, undergraduate student development, and general college policies and procedures is required. Knowledge of organic gardening practices is strongly preferred. Excellent communication skills including interpersonal and online student engagement, writing, public speaking, and computing skills (Microsoft Office, website development, social media) are required. Required skills also include effective management of student groups and employees. Required abilities include developing and implementing both short-term and long-term plans; interacting effectively with students, faculty, and staff; self-motivation and initiative; building positive relationships with diverse members of the campus and surrounding community; working independently with minimal supervision, but within a collaborative team environment; communicating effectively in oral and written forms; managing a program budget; and simultaneously managing multiple priorities. EducationA Master’s degree in an environmentally-related discipline or higher education student affairs is required. ExperienceTwo years of experience working in higher education with a focus on developing and implementing sustainability initiatives, coordinating co-curricular activities, collaborating across offices/departments, and supervising student employees is required. Physical DemandThe position requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. The position requires the ability to move about the campus and the local community including on rough surfaces and in a garden setting. The position requires the ability to talk and to hear instruction. The position requires occasional manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to feel, handle, and reach. The position requires occasional stooping, crouching and bending. The position requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds. Working conditions are both indoor and outdoor.

    Experience in a Student Affairs capacity in a residential college setting is preferred.
