The Department of Special Education (SPED) in the College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, Assistant Professor position beginning August 15, 2022. Position Number: 0082095.

Continuous - application review begins December 1, 2021
Salary Information: Minimum of $64,896, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Other Conditions: General or Special funds, contingent upon position clearance, department needs, and fund availability. Selectees are required to complete the COE New Faculty orientation in the first year, Title IX training, and pass a criminal background check.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses via on campus and/or a variety of distance delivery modes; 
  • Supervise candidates' field activities in field-based teacher preparation programs; 
  • Serve as cohort coordinator for candidates in teacher training programs; 
  • Advise students; 
  • Maintain active program of research/scholarly activity and publications in area of specialization; 
  • Provide service to the university, public schools, and professional community; 
  • Participate in program review, program assessment, and accreditation activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Doctorate in special education or closely related field from an accredited institution; will consider ABD if completed by August 2022;
  2. Teaching experience with PK-12 students who have high incidence disabilities (mild intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, or emotional/behavioral disabilities), in public or private school settings;
  3. Broad knowledge of special education for students with high incidence disabilities;
  4. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience in teaching special education teacher candidates in higher education.
  2. Experience in field supervision of special education teacher candidates.
  3. Experience in teaching non-traditional college students that are culturally and linguistically diverse.
  4. Experience teaching Pk-12 students that are culturally and linguistically diverse learners, including English learners (ELs)/Multilingual learners (MLLs).
  5. Experience teaching Native Hawaiian students.
  6. Experience in design and course delivery in varied formats (i.e., hybrid, fully online).
  7. Evidence of scholarly research activity related to high incidence disabilities in any of the following areas:  literacy, instructional methods, assessment, or behavior management.
  8. Experience with inclusive education of students with high incidence disabilities.
  9. Demonstrated effectiveness in working on collaborative teams.
