Job Description

Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking applicants for a tenure track faculty position as a Food Processing Microbiologist in the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST).

Responsibilities
This is a 9-month tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with responsibilities in research (50%) and extension (50%). The successful candidate will be expected to develop an impactful research and extension program focused on the microbiological safety of processed foods. The individual will develop a nationally and internationally recognized research and extension programs supported by extramural funding with emphasis on the development and application of emerging technologies in food processing to address food safety and quality; application of omics to improve food safety, food quality and shelf life; and development of innovative technologies to detect and control foodborne pathogens. The successful candidate will provide outreach, education and technical assistance to Virginia food industries. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other faculty and extension/outreach programs in the Department of Food Science and Technology as well as other departments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Agricultural Research and Extension Centers in Virginia, and other academic units across the University. The individual is also expected to develop and sustain relationships with industry leaders in food processing and food microbiology. Global engagement is important as the incumbent career advances and will contribute to the expansion of Virginia Tech’s reputation globally.

The selected candidate will be expected to recruit and mentor graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) and undergraduate students reflecting a diverse population. Additionally, the individual will be expected to serve on department, college and university committees as well as those for appropriate professional organizations.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in food science & technology, microbiology, agricultural and/or biological engineering or related discipline by appointment start date; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Expertise in thermal and non-thermal food processing; Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct scholarly research; Demonstrated ability to engage with a diverse audience; and a strong commitment to create an environment that fosters diversity and inclusion. Position requires occasional travel to attend conferences and meetings; Criminal background check required.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-doctoral and/or industrial experience; Demonstrated ability to write competitive research proposals; Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain relationships with other academic institutions, regulatory agencies as well as the food industry; Demonstrated ability to develop, analyze and present data from scientific studies; Certification and/or training experiences in Better Process Control School, Preventive Controls for Human Food, HACCP, current Good Manufacturing Practice and other food safety training; and a demonstrated ability to implement accessibility technologies to reach diverse audiences.
