Academic
Advisor
The Academic Advisor plays a proactive
role in student success and retention efforts. Academic Advisors
assist matriculated students in navigating their chosen academic
program(s). To support student success and retention, Academic
Advisors use student data to support students in their studies,
course completion, and scheduling. Academic Advisors are experts in
the programs for which they are responsible and foster
collaborative relationships with faculty and instructional staff to
better assist students. Academic Advisors are familiar with all of
the college resources that are available to students so that they
may direct them to the appropriate departments based on their
needs.
Expected Contributions:
Monitor assigned courses and course data in order to conduct proactive outreach to students who may need assistance Consult with students on course planning and scheduling. Recommend appropriate courses based on program-specific learning paths Track the advancement of students through a program to ensure student persistence from course to course Provide assistance to at-risk students Develop study plans and strategies with students using the resources available at the college or through 3rd parties Identify resources that are beneficial to a student’s success and, where possible, develop new resources for students Foster cooperative relationships with instructors in order to better serve students Work with Program Directors, faculty members, and instructors to learn the importance of different designations in the financial services landscape Analyze and take action on course-level data. Use course-level data to report on caseloads Clarify program requirements, policies, and procedures for students Assist the student in identifying appropriate institutional resources Facilitate relationships between the student and other individuals on campus who may provide assistance Other duties as assigned Essential Qualifications & Competencies • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required; Bachelor’s degree preferred • Three to five years of directly related experience and service background • Must be highly organized and capable of handling multiple course sections • Experience in Word, Excel, and relational database management systems (i.e., Peoplesoft, CampusView, Brightspace, etc.) • Understand financial services and insurance landscape and be able to speak with students about them (will train) • Strong communication skills
• Effective listening skills
• The ability to work with a diverse group of students of different ages • Proven ability to work independently
• Flexibility in work hours expected
