MSU Denver’s Strategy, Marketing and Communications ( SMC ) branch is looking for a creative and efficient storyteller with strong journalistic instincts who can craft compelling content for a variety of externally and internally focused publications, including MSU Denver’s award-winning RED online newsroom and the Early Bird, the University’s daily internal newsletter. Our ideal candidate will be a strong enterprise reporter who can consistently generate innovative story ideas that help advance the University’s mission and brand. We’re looking for a team player who can also work independently and who can turn in daily copy on tight deadlines. S/he should possess exceptional interviewing skills and be comfortable working with a wide range of sources and University stakeholders, including the University president and senior leaders, faculty, staff, students and community partners. The SMC staff writer should be social-media savvy, with the ability to craft effective posts across multiple digital channels. In addition, the staff writer will serve as a backup editor and should be proficient in AP style.
IND208 Duties/Responsibilities
Researches, pitches and produces daily and long-term stories for MSU Denver’s online newsroom, RED, as well as RED Magazine, the University’s alumni magazine published three times per year.

Reports and produces stories for the Early Bird, MSU Denver’s daily internal newsletter.

Writes for multiple digital platforms, including the University’s social media channels and the University website.

Serves as a backup editor for the Early Bird, RED online newsroom and other University publications.

Builds and publishes web content.

Collaborates with the managing editor, content strategist, social media strategist, director of media relations and other communications team members to ensure timely and effective distribution of content across multiple channels.

Works with the managing editor to implement revisions to stories and to facilitate a smooth approval process.

Works with photographers, video producers and graphic artists to gather and incorporate compelling visual content with each piece of written content.

Writes and edits video scripts, advertising copy and content for marketing collateral. Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, English or a closely related field.
  • Professional experience writing stories and other types of content across a variety of communications channels, including print, digital and social media.
  • Professional experience in the communications or journalism fields, with a portfolio of published news and/or feature stories.
  • Experience using web content management systems and email marketing and communications platforms.
  • Working professional knowledge of Associated Press style as demonstrated by a cover letter, resume and writing samples.
Successful applicants will ensure their resumes clearly demonstrate that their work experience describes how they meet all required qualifications. Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of professional experience writing for a print or online news organization, or for an institution of higher learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to report and write daily news stories under tight deadlines and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience writing video scripts and advertising copy.
  • Experience editing copy for content and style.
  • Bilingual in Spanish: able to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently.
  • Experience creating content for social media platforms.
