Animation Position Announcement

The Kansas City Art Institute, a national leader in visual arts education, seeks nominations and applications for a full-time Assistant Professor tenure-track position in Animation to begin August of 2022. The successful candidate will play a vital role in the further development and expansion of the current Animation Department curriculum.

KCAI Department of Animation

The award-winning Animation Department features a creatively designed, mentorship based and technologically integrated approach to the teaching of all aspects of the medium. Major coursework is complemented by intensive studio practice, liberal arts, and professional practice curriculum. Areas of concentration include classical, experimental, and digital animation but no one solution is prioritized over another.  Accordingly, the program's goals are to equip students with a diverse array of animation skills, informed by a strong historical context and a critical conceptual foundation that enables them to become well-rounded animation professionals able to thrive within a rapidly evolving field.

Requirements for the Position

The successful candidate’s qualifications and professional experience should demonstrate a vibrant and diverse body of work in animation. A primary focus in 3D methodologies and associated production skills are required (both specialists & generalists are encouraged). Additionally, the candidate should be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the animation field.  Applicants should be conversant with the constraints of current professional practice in the field.

Demonstrate proficiency and ability to instruct the following software is required:

Maya, Adobe Creative Suite (specifically: Photoshop, After FX.)

 Knowledge of the following software is encouraged: Cinema 4D, Toon Boom Harmony

The position requires the capacity to collaborate and support faculty colleagues, develop curriculum, establish infrastructure and implementation of dedicated 3D instruction as well as a core animation studio and elective courses. Candidates must possess the ability to instruct and advise students in developing a professional practice in the field of animation. Excellent written and oral communication skills and a strong collaborative spirit for teamwork and service to the department, institution, and field are imperative.

Education and Experience Requirements

An MFA and demonstrated professional achievement in the field with full-time college-level teaching experience required.
