MISSION OR GOAL OF UNIT:
The Virginia Center on Aging (VCoA) is a statewide agency created by the Virginia General Assembly, with our home at Virginia Commonwealth University in the College of Health Professions. Since 1978, VCoA has worked to protect and improve the quality of life of older Virginians, so that they might remain interdependent and contributing members to life in Virginia. The VCoA was created to be an interdisciplinary study, research, information and resource facility for the Commonwealth of Virginia utilizing the full capabilities of faculty, staff, libraries, laboratories and clinics for the benefit of older Virginians and the expansion of knowledge pertaining to the aged and to the aging. The mission of the VCoA is to define and protect the quality of life for older Virginians so that they may remain autonomous, contribute to their communities, and have access to resources for continued learning and personal growth. We provide data, resources and insightful recommendations to decision makers (legislators, practitioners, service providers and caregivers) to enable them to make informed decisions about our elderly. The Virginia Center on Aging is situated in the College of Health Professions on the VCU Medical Center Campus. VCU is designated by the Carnegie Foundation to the combined statuses of “Research University, Very High Research Activity “and “Community Engaged Campus.”

CHIEF PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION IN SUPPORT OF THE ABOVE MISSION OR GOAL:

The Virginia Center on Aging in the College of Health Professions is seeking a colleague to lead and collaborate in teaching, research and scholarship, participate in service to the center and the university, and contribute to leadership in the profession. The Executive Director, as the chief administrative officer of the Virginia Center on Aging, is responsible for the direction and administration of center operations. This includes oversight of programs of continuing education, educational training and education for older people, educational courses for students in disciplines other than gerontology, research in gerontology, grant writing and collecting and disseminating statewide data on older adults. Executive Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty and staff, administrative expertise to include vision, long-term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of initiatives. The Director participates in teaching; monitors and oversees research; and assesses the effectiveness and impact of center operations. The Director of the Virginia Center on Aging reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Gerontology in the College of Health Professions. Rank to be determined based on qualifications and experience. RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Virginia Center on Aging was created through the state legislative process. The Code of Virginia specifically states:

The Center, under the direction of the executive director, shall:

1. Develop and promote programs of continuing education and in-service training for persons who work with or provide services to the elderly;
2. Develop educational and training programs for persons 60 years old or older to assist them in adjusting to the aging process, including retirement planning, health maintenance, employment opportunities, recreation, and self-development;
3. Foster development of educational courses for students at institutions of higher education in disciplines other than gerontology to increase their understanding of the process of aging in humans;
4. Conduct research in the field of gerontology and make the research findings available to interested public and private agencies;
5. Collect and maintain data on a statewide and regional basis on the characteristics and conditions of persons over the age of 60 and make such data available to the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services and all other organizations and state agencies involved in planning and delivering services to persons over the age of 60;
6. Coordinate the functions and services of the Center with the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (i) in such a manner that the knowledge, education, and research programs in the Center constitute a readily available resource for the Department in planning and service delivery and (ii) to prevent any duplication of effort;
7. Apply for and accept grants from the United States government, state government, state agencies, or any other source to carry out the purposes of this section. The Center may execute such agreements and comply with such conditions as may be necessary to apply for and accept such grants;
8. Accept gifts, bequests, and any other thing of value to be used to carry out the purposes of this section;
9. Receive, administer, and expend all funds and other assistance made available to the Center to carry out the purposes of this section; and
10. Do all other things necessary or convenient to carrying out the purposes of this section.


Additional College of Health Professions Responsibilities include:
1. Directs and administers all programs offered by the Virginia Center on Aging

2. Serves as the primary liaison to the Office of the Dean and all Departments in the College of Health Professions.

3. Supervises and evaluates the faculty and staff

4. Prepares and manages the annual budget

5. Supports faculty in the preparation of course materials in keeping with the curriculum

6. Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of programs and initiatives

7. Performs liaison functions with the consumer public and other stakeholders

8. Responsible for teaching, research and production of scholarship

9. Serves on department, college and/or university committees

10. Serves as a mentor for students, faculty, and staff

11. Represents the center in the wider community

12. Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Health Professions

Qualifications:

Ability to attend to a variety of demands; solve problems quickly; transfer didactic theory to practical application; work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders; assume a continuing self-education program to maintain professional excellence in gerontological practice and education; work within a diverse environment; and work to achieve the strategic plan of the College and University. Additional Qualifications include:
REQUIRED
Graduate degree or PhD in Gerontology or closely-related field.
●Demonstrated scholarly production sufficient for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.
●Academic administrative experience.
●Evidence of leadership in Gerontology teaching, research and service.
●Senior faculty members will be required to have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department.
●Experience or high potential for effectively and inclusively educating and mentoring students from under-represented minority and/or historically marginalized communities.
●Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse environment for faculty, staff, and students and a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

PREFERRED
Minimum (preferred) ten years’ experience in academic/administrative gerontology
