SUMMARY OF POSITION

 

The Coordinator of International Student Services and Compliance manages Northern State University’s international exchange partner relationships and agreements, international exchange student recruitment, and the maintenance of international student records and files. Responsible for full compliance with all aspects of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), the Coordinator serves as lead Designated School Official (DSO) and will manage a portfolio of immigration casework. This includes the tracking and maintenance of student records within the SEVIS and requires specialized knowledge for the understanding and application of federal regulations, academic policies, and procedures. The Coordinator is also responsible for advising international students, staff, faculty, and program participants on program content, policies, procedures, and activities while interpreting and applying rules and regulations specific to the operations of the program. Advises international students on employment, health insurance, academics, and maintaining SEVIS status. Develops and oversees all aspects of support services for NSU’s international population, including orientation, support activities, programming, cultural trips, and Friendship Family Program. Serves as a coordinator and liaison for international student organizations. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Verify immigration compliance and liaise with SEVIS as a DSO, issue I-20 forms of eligibility for the F1 Student Visa, maintain and update information in the SEVIS database accurately.
  • Monitor F-1 international student statuses, alerts, records, and information for SEVIS compliance: detailed student and program record-keeping, running and verifying reports, preparing SEVIS drafts.
  • Add newly admitted exchange students’ visa information into Banner upon receipt of application.
  • Communicate with new and current students regarding F-1 visa requirements, visa applications, transfer processes travel restrictions and other visa-related regulations.
  • Advise and assist students regarding change of status applications, travel, reinstatement applications, and other visa-related regulations.
  • Attend SEVIS web trainings, NAFSA conference and others to remain current with procedures.
  • Provide Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) assistance to students and track in SEVIS.
  • Consult regularly with representatives on and off-campus including organizations and agencies regarding the interpretation and implementation of the program and institutional policies.
  • Coordinate and manage the Friendship Family Program.
  • Use word processing, graphics, statistical, spreadsheet, and/or database software for student tracking and monitoring.
  • Create reports regarding international student enrollment.
  • Coordinate, evaluate, revise, and conduct International Student Orientation, arrival, move-in, and various workshops to create continuous learning opportunities for international students in accordance with federal regulations for non-immigrant visa holders, national and local laws, university policies, and sponsorship requirements.
  • Manage/maintain exchange agreements with partner universities.
  • Establish and maintain professional networks and relationships with local, state, national, and international organizations and governmental agencies to expand international student enrollment.
  • Promote the critical role of international students as representatives of their countries throughout the university and the local community.
  • Develop and manage the university’s online visibility within international student social media platforms.
  • Travel to partner universities to help maintain agreements and relationships.
  • Oversee and develop international club programming.
  • Manage and organize cultural trips.
  • Support international tax workshops and tax volunteers.
  • Administer ACCUPLACER exams for placement testing.
  • Ensure alignment with campus marketing, branding, and communications initiatives.
  • Provide general clerical support for establishing and maintaining files, answering phones, greeting guests in the office, and/or scheduling meetings.
  • Supervise and coordinate training for graduate assistants and student office workers.
  • Manage the budget for International Student Services.
  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
  • Serve as an advocate for international students within a student development framework.
  • Perform other duties related to the above position as assigned by the Director of the Office of International Programs.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

Required Education and Experience

 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with one (1) year of work professional experience.
  • Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) with a working knowledge of Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) procedures and legal requirements of international students and hosting institutions.
  • Experience interpreting and applying federal immigration laws and regulations.
  • Experience exercising discretion and independent judgment in making informed decisions in complex situations.
  • Experience working with complex organizational processes and procedures.
