Job Description:

In alignment with Fairfield University’s Jesuit and Catholic mission, the Office of Residence Life seeks to promote the integration of students’ mind, body, and spirit. The assistant director of Residence Life is an integral team member facilitating the Office of Residence Life’s leadership and formation efforts with its professional staff and student leaders. The assistant director provides strategic support in ensuring consistency and on-going formation opportunities that align with Fairfield’s Jesuit and Catholic mission and current high impact practices.

Position Title: Assistant Director for Junior and Senior Residential Living

Position Description:

We are currently searching for candidates who are committed to working as part of a leadership team in our Junior and Senior residential living and learning communities. The Assistant Director is a vital member of the team, responsible for student formation within the Townhouse and Dolan Apartment Community. The Assistant Director at Fairfield University has primary responsibility of the management of the residence hall facilities. They are responsible for 500-800 residents and dedicated to the student growth and development outside of the classroom.

This on-campus, live in position can be demanding of personal time especially during peak times of year. This position includes some night and weekend responsibilities. The duties of the Assistant Director will include supervision of a paraprofessional staff as well as a graduate residence coordinator, oversight of the Townhouse and Dolan Apartment area, crisis management including serving in a duty rotation, serving as a conduct officer, and representing the Office of Residence Life in committee meetings across campus.

This position is based at Fairfield University’s Fairfield, CT campus.

The Assistant Director for Junior and Senior Residential Living is a 12-month position.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling or related field and 2 years of post-graduate residence life experience or other related experiences are required. Particular emphasis will be placed on candidates who have experience with facilitation of intentional residential communities.

Remuneration:

The compensation package includes a furnished apartment, meal plan, local phone, cable, utilities, Ethernet, retirement with matching (TIAA/CREF), comprehensive medical plan, & tuition remission. Salary is highly competitive.

Essential Functions: Communicate, support and facilitate the residential experience for Juniors and Seniors living on-campus at Fairfield University.

Supervises and manages residential communities dedicated to the Build-a-House living and learning community. This involves:
  • Supervision, training, selection and staff development of eight Resident Assistants

  • Being a live-in presence for500-800 residents within your community working day, weekend and evening hours

  • Mentoring and advising student concerns and appropriately referring students to resources on campus, e.g., Public Safety, Counseling Services, Financial Aid, Health Center, Campus Ministry, Academic Deans etc.

  • Creating a safe community through policy enforcement and awareness

  • Opening and closing of the Residence Halls throughout the academic year and summer

  • Managing their residential facility, including conducting health and safety instructions, facilities management, room changes, etc.

  • Serves as a Conduct Officer for Code of Conduct Violations in their area

  • Participating in rotating on-call duty responsibilities for crisis management

Build-A House Living and Learning Facilitation and Management
  • Working with the Associate Director for Living and Learning & Community Partnerships, the assistant director will recruit, select, and manage the build-a-house program for eligible junior and senior students.

  • Create a recruitment plan in order to educate the sophomore and junior student population about the build-a-house program.

  • Create a selection plan that will allow application reviewers to fairly select successful build-a-house program participants

  • Plan and implement a training program and guidebook for all Build-A-House participants to follow

  • Track all programming requirements for the Build-A-House participants to ensure students are meeting these requirements

Coordinates and develops specific residential living and learning programs
  • Assist Resident Assistants in developing programs to meet the holistic needs of the students in the living and learning programs

  • Encourage staff and students in planning and developing programs to meet the diverse needs of the residence hall population

  • Manage the programming budget

  • Work collaboratively with supervisors and other campus partners within the LLC to achieve specific learning goals and outcomes

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and assessment of living and learning programs

  • Maintains a working knowledge of and collaborates with campus departments

  • Serve as a partner in the holistic development of students by working with the Associate Directors and other campus partners

Administrative, Code of Conduct and Retention Efforts
  • Work closely with campus partners to implement promising practices and outreach to maintain and promote Junior and Senior persistence to graduation

  • Assist the Director of Residence Life to utilize assessment data to identify improvement opportunities, strategies to enhance the student experience, and guide ongoing staff and program development.

  • Serves as main conduct hearing officer for Code of Conduct violations taking place in Townhouse or Dolan Area

Participates and supports the Office of Residence Life on such projects as:
  • Student leader development and training

  • Housing Assignments and Lottery

  • Serve as the representative for the Office of Residence Life on a campus wide committee(s)

  • Other duties as assigned

Promotes safe and secure working conditions.
  • Promoting the proper utilization of equipment, staff and materials.

  • Reporting immediately unsafe working conditions to supervisor.

Pay Range: $44,000-$46,000

This position is based at Fairfield University’s Fairfield, CT campus.
