The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design seeks an energetic and innovative leader to serve as the Director of the Industrial Design program. We are looking for a leader who will collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to articulate a compelling vision for the program’s pedagogy, research, outreach and operations, in support of the College’s strategic plan and following the goals of the University Strategic Plan.

The program offers BS and MS degrees in Industrial Design as well as a future Healthcare Design concentration. The College plans to add a Healthcare Hub to the Industrial Design program to effectively serve the burgeoning medical device industry and the world’s largest medical complex, The Texas Medical Center, home to cutting edge research and innovations in healthcare.

Ideal candidates will continue to build on our uniqueness as the only Industrial Design program in a four-state region, amplify our voice in the national discourse in design and design education, and expand our international visibility and prestige as a premier industrial design program. A demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and the ability to foster a community where diverse people and perspectives are respected, valued and celebrated, is essential. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad, yet critical understanding of industrial design as a profession and discipline and its related disciplines. Candidates will also be expected to provide evidence of teaching and leadership excellence. We encourage candidates with multidisciplinary interests to apply. Qualified candidates for Director of Industrial Design will be appointed with tenure.

The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design offers its students and faculty a platform of integrated disciplines—Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Industrial Design—that work together to negotiate the complexities of contemporary design practice, making extensive use of our state-of-the-art digital and fabrication facilities. Situated in the heart of one of the most diverse and fastest-growing cities in the United States, our College promotes the idea of the city as a laboratory for research, where design is considered a form of critical thinking, calling forth innovative solutions for contemporary conditions.

The incoming director will oversee the daily operation of the undergraduate program, will work with the Director of Graduate Studies on the development of the graduate industrial design program, and will collaborate with the College program leaders. In addition, the Director will be responsible for supporting and facilitating the work of the faculty, and will represent the industrial design program to both internal and external constituencies.

Candidates will be expected to teach at least one course per semester and to apply their leadership skills toward strategic planning for the program. The director will be expected to work with the Dean and the College research liaison officer in the development of sponsored studios and other funding opportunities. The Director is appointed by the Dean of the College on a three-year, renewable term.

Specific administrative duties include:
  • Provides leadership, strategy, and vision to the program that aligns with the College’s mission and strategic plan. • Advances the development of industrial design pedagogy and curriculum.
  • Fosters and supports a positive scholarly environment that focuses on excellence in research, teaching, and service. • Works to with the College to expand and maintain networks and strategic partnerships with industry and key constituents.
  • Participates in strategic planning, budget planning and management, and personnel management.
  • Develops a talent strategy to recruit, retain, and promote excellence and productivity in faculty and staff.
  • Leads the effort for attaining and retaining accreditation Specific faculty duties include:
  • A minimal teaching load. (one course per semester) Continuted research in area of specialization Qualifications
  • Professional degree in industrial design or related disciplines.
  • Proven record of scholarship, research, and/or professional practice.
  • Extensive teaching experience in an accredited institution.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
