Facilities Services invites applications for a Stationary Engineer to operate high-pressure boilers and do repair and replacement duties during the yearly maintenance outage. The Heating Plant is responsible for generating and supplying steam to buildings on campus for heating, cooking, sterilizing, hot water and electrical generation. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operations of boilers and turbine generators and ancillary equipment using electronic, pneumatic and hand controls; maintaining proper steam pressures and boiler water levels; adjusting equipment to maintain steam load requirements; attending to all boiler auxiliaries; ensuring efficient operation of the turbine generator; closely monitoring exhaust pressures; and implementing proper operating procedures for casualty control. This position is also responsible for maintaining watch on gauges, recorders and meters and controls for correct operations; maintaining an accurate boiler log, and entering information every three hours all boiler and generator parameters; mixing and injecting all boiler and line chemicals; monitoring and regenerating water softening systems; and performing general housekeeping in plant. This position will work in rotating shifts.

This position requires incumbent to develop a working knowledge and ability to troubleshoot and correct common boiler fault conditions; and develop a working knowledge of basic controls.

Required Skills
  • Knowledge of industrial casualty and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of boiler and turbine operation.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and electronic controls.
  • Knowledge of boiler operations and maintenance procedures for boilers, turbines, and their auxiliary devices and components.
  • Ability to operate, adjust and control heating plant equipment without supervision.
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs.
Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)
  • Lifting: Ground to 48 inches, up to 50 lbs. Ground to overhead, up to 15 lbs.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 50 lbs for 50 feet or less.
  • Pushing/Pulling: (during the use of tools and pushing/pulling hand trucks). Push and pull forces required, 70 lbs sustained.
  • Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing position while using tools.
  • Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead.
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold.
  • Walking various distances throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces, distances up to 1000 feet for the fireman, and 35,000 feet for the fitter & foreman.
  • Crawling on hands and knees, up to 15 feet.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 lbs of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 65 lbs).
  • Work in high-temperature environments
  • Work safely in a high noise environments
  • Work while wearing PPE including respirators
Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment .

Preferred Education
  • Experience performing boiler, turbine and distribution piping maintenance in an industrial setting.
Minimum Required Experience
  • Licensed as a First Class Boiler Operator in the State of Montana.
  • High school education, minimum four (4) years of experience operating and maintaining high-pressure boilers and pressure vessels requiring a first class license to operate, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Montana State Driver’s License.
