The Tax Manager is responsible for all matters relating to the university's federal, state, local, and international tax compliance. The Tax Manager will handle all tax filing requirements including but not limited to the Federal form 990, 990T, MA Form PC and other state, local, and international filings. Working closely with the Tax Director, the employee will serve as a liaison between the Controller's Office and the university community and will provide updates and advice on all tax matters related to federal, state, local, and international tax laws and regulations. Additionally, the Tax Manager will lead training for the university community on tax compliance and will regularly communicate updates, changes and recommendations to the university community and senior management. The employee will also act as a key tax contact to external auditors, and external domestic and international tax advisors.

  • Perform independent research, interpret, and apply federal and state tax laws to various situations.
  • Provide training and technical assistance across the University to help enhance understanding of, and compliance with, tax laws and regulations.
  • Lead the review and administration of university-wide tax policy including unrelated business income and providing indirect tax oversight in areas of employment tax, scholarship and fellowships, issues surrounding charitable gifts, non-resident alien tax compliance, and tax-exempt bond compliance. Collaborate with various departments on campus which may impact tax reporting and tax returns to ensure compliance throughout the university.
  • Assist the Tax Director with tax analysis and advice to senior managers on significant strategic domestic and international business opportunities/initiatives.
  • Manage all activities related to and lead the successful filing of Form 990, Form 990T, state, local, and international tax returns, as required.
  • Coordinate and communicate with various university departments in gathering information required to prepare complete and accurate returns.
  • Work with outside tax advisors to coordinate timely review and filing of returns.
  • Respond to correspondence received by the university from federal, state, local and international tax authorities.

  • Minimum of seven years of tax experience, preferably with exempt organizations and/or tax compliance oriented
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in principles of taxation and compliance
  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in Finance, Accounting or related field preferred.
  • Must possess strong analytic, technical, negotiation, decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge and experience in financial systems
  • High attention to detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with both senior management and peers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • JD, CPA, and/or MST (Master's in Taxation) preferred
