Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Penn State Hazleton invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Computer Science, This is a tenure-line, full-time, 36-weeks appointment to begin August 2022, or as negotiated.

This position will teach each semester using traditional, hybrid and online delivery methods. Teaching assignments will include classroom and laboratory courses in Computer Science. Teaching assignments may require teaching day and/or evening as needed. Publish in refereed journals. Participate in professional organizations and in course, curriculum, and program development. Advise students and provide career guidance. Participate in campus, university, and community service activities. Engage in diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

This position will teach in support of a new baccalaureate degree program offered by three Penn State campuses in conjunction with the College of Engineering: Penn State Beaver, Penn State Brandywine, and Penn State Hazleton. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty at the other campuses to deliver a portion of the curriculum to multiple campuses using a variety of distance delivery methods. The ability to support diverse student body and campus community, including appreciation and respect of differences in race and ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, religious affiliation, age and life experience, nationality and language, and in physical capabilities is required. We actively look for faculty with a commitment to supporting diversity in their various roles.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field from an accredited institution. Teaching duties fall within the Computer Science degree offered at the three campuses. Ability to teach courses in object-oriented programming, systems programming, computer organization and design, theory of computation, operating systems design, programming languages, and electives in the instructor's area of expertise. Evidence of potential in research and publication in the area of artificial intelligence or a closely related field is expected. Commitment to high-quality instruction in a student-centered environment is expected. Interest in active and collaborative learning, the instructional use of technology, and hybrid and online teaching is an advantage. Prior college-level and online teaching experience preferred. Enthusiasm for working in a multidisciplinary environment is important.

Students and faculty at Penn State Hazleton have all of the resources of a major research university at their disposal, but in a small college atmosphere. Class sizes are small and the student/faculty ratio is low, so students can receive much individual attention. Our faculty members are committed to providing a high-quality educational experience to their students and are actively engaged in research. Our students receive a world-class education delivered in a small campus setting and have opportunities to participate in undergraduate research projects supervised by faculty members.
