Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is seeking a Pulmonary Function Technician who will work under the direction of a physician and the laboratory coordinator/manager, measures, analyzes and records pulmonary function procedures, and performs non-invasive Cardiac diagnostic procedures on the patient care units, in the department, or in the outpatient clinic. This individual serves as an intermediate to a high-level resource capable of independent work with the Pulmonary Laboratory when performing routine pulmonary function testing and cardiac monitoring. This position performs independent tests, implements quality assurance and quality control programs, trains new employees, troubleshoots equipment problems, and helps insure adherence to Joint Commission, institutional, and governmental policies and regulations. Participates in educational and clinical programs and quality improvement. Participates and attends continuing education seminars.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Required to meet and comply with departmental standards regarding the use of all department supplies and equipment. Completes billing records within departmental standards.
  • Consults with physicians and health care team in order to recommend appropriate testing procedures to provide results that will assist the physician with the treatment of the patient’s respiratory disease/diagnosis.
  • Identifies impending changes in patient’s condition and takes appropriate action. Identifies departmental needs and takes appropriate and effective steps in resolving problems. Uses defined procedures and protocols effectively
  • Utilizes information generated from both computerized and paper systems that support functions such as medical records and pulmonary databases. Adheres to federal regulations regarding patient privacy (HIPAA).
  • Requires the ability to function with ease in both hospital and outpatient clinic settings through periodic rotation of personnel. Requires attention to detail. Requires shifting of scheduled days and hours when necessary to ensure efficient operation.
  • Work may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gowns, masks, and gloves.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    High School Diploma or GED with certificate in respiratory therapy OR Associate’s Degree in respiratory therapy OR Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science or Biology required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year (12 months) experience in a pulmonary function lab, preferably in an academic/research environment.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Requires a thorough understanding and ability to apply all equipment used in pulmonary function testing and cardiac monitoring. Includes but is not limited to the following: spirometry/flow volume loops, gas dilutional lung volumes, CO diffusing capacity, plethysmographic lung volumes, arterial blood gas procurement and analysis, maximum voluntary ventilation, 6 minute walk test, pulse oximetry, sputum induction, cardio-pulmonary exercise tests, methacholine challenge and any appropriate equipment used to diagnosis pulmonary diseases.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of pulmonary anatomy and physiology system and familiarity with current A.T.S. standards for pulmonary function testing.
  • Knowledge of equipment and techniques used in respiratory/pulmonary care for age specific populations. Requires the aptitude to be trained and the knowledge to operate all equipment used in pulmonary function testing, as well as equipment that may be used as a cardiac technician.
  • Must be competent in the ability to analyze and interpret measured data and communicate the results to the physician and health care team members.
  • The ability to interact with age specific population to which they are assigned.
  • Ability to use all equipment necessary to obtain quality pulmonary function and cardiology patient data.
  • Possesses knowledge of normal hemodynamic vital signs.
  • Ability to perform pulmonary function studies including spirometry, plethysmography, diffusion capacity, sputum inductions and arterial blood gases.
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication skills to interact with physicians, medical staff, patients, visitors and other employees.
  • Will participate in the formal training of respiratory care, nursing, physician staff, and students.
  • Must exhibit competency in applying the American Thoracic testing guideline/protocol for each test modality.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • CPR (BLS) certification required. Credentialing through the N.B.R.C. as a respiratory care practitioner or pulmonary function technologist required. (Certification and/or registry)
  • Must be proficient in the testing of patients using pulmonary function analyzers, plethysmograph, cardio-pulmonary exercise systems, blood gas analyzer, EKG monitor, familiarity with oxygen and compressed gas systems, ultrasonic nebulizer, dosimeter metered dose inhalers and pulse oximeter equipment.
  • Must be proficient in maintenance of equipment used in diagnostic testing of lung function and cardiac patients.

Physical Requirements:

    Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, pharmacologic agents, and levels of ionizing radiation. Work requires standing or sitting for extended periods of time and transporting patients and/or equipment from one location to another Work requires moving and lifting of supplies and equipment as needed.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Technicians with 1 year technologist experience at JHH/JHU are required to function as Lead Technician when appropriate and Preceptor to new technicians.

Starting Salary Range: $16.42 - $22.57/hr (commensurate with experience)
