Dean, Gallatin School of Individualized Study

New York University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

Since its founding in 1831, New York University has been an innovator in higher education, reaching out to an emerging middle class, embracing an urban identity and professional focus, and promoting a global vision that informs its 19 schools and colleges.

Today, that trailblazing spirit makes NYU one of the most prominent and respected research universities in the world, featuring top-ranked academic programs and accepting fewer than one-in-five undergraduates. Anchored in New York City and with degree-granting campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai as well as 12 study away sites throughout the world, NYU is a leader in global education, with more international students and more students studying abroad than any other US university.

The Gallatin School of Individualized Study is an interdisciplinary school within New York University that provides a highly distinctive liberal arts education for a diverse student body marked by creativity, flexibility and rigor. Combining the best of a small college experience and the strengths of a large research university, students individualize their course of study in close collaboration with a diverse and dynamic faculty who are committed interdisciplinary research scholars, teachers and advisers. A particular focus on combining learning inside and outside the classroom, within the dynamic context of New York City and the Globe, is supported by a committed staff whose administrative roles are closely integrated into the creative and intellectual community that is Gallatin.

Founded in 1972 as the “University Without Walls” and guided by the philosophy of self-directed learning, the Gallatin faculty has grown to include research scholars and practitioners from a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives across the humanities and social sciences. As highly engaged teachers and advisers, they guide students in their intellectual and creative pursuits, helping them develop an individualized and interdisciplinary area of inquiry.
