Department Profile
The CalWORKs (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids) department is seeking individuals who are compassionate, creative, and equity-minded and who demonstrate a commitment to student equity, inclusion, and access, to help to support the departments commitment to student success. This individual will join an outstanding team of faculty, staff, and administrators to provide high quality services. The CalWORKs program provides services to retain economically and socially disadvantaged parenting students receiving cash aid from the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) to successfully achieve their educational goals and long-term economic self-sufficiency. The Job Placement Technician will work in the CalWORKs office, under the supervision of the CalWORKs Director, in the division of Student Equity and Success, which consists of CalWORKs, EOPS/CARE/LINC, and Veterans Resource Center.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Job Placement Technician concentrates on intake and initial interview processes.

Provides support and service to the job development and job placement program. Interviews students to determine education, work history, and qualifications for on-and-off campus job placements. Orients students to the services provided, developing skills in student job seekers, and providing general office support. Promotes job placement services on campus and with local employers.

Job Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receives student referrals from counselors and others and receives inquires directly from students and volunteers.
  • Conducts follow-up visits to review the performance of participants; makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintains up-to-date temporary, full-time, part-time, and graduate job banks consisting of employer information and job specifications. Maintains, updates, and distributes job orders to appropriate departments.
  • Interviews students to verify education, experience, and special qualifications. Provides individual assistance for students by critiquing and advising on preparation of resumes, approaches to interviews, and research of employers.
  • Assists Counselors with identifying possible matches of students to jobs based on interest, skills and abilities, and aptitude.
  • Assists with organizing of and may attend job fairs. Publicizes, seeks out, and makes arrangements for job fair presenters and arranges for other similar activities. Coordinates and conducts student workshops and community orientations.
  • Refers students to suitable employment, off campus volunteer opportunities, and/or internships and coordinates referrals and services with specially-funded work programs. Assists in the development of job training-related activities.
  • Compiles statistics and other data for special reports. Routinely prepare reports on referrals, job placement transactions, retention, and success rates. Assists with local labor market surveys that identify potential employment opportunities and rates of pay.
  • Ensures fair treatment of all student applicants for and recipients of job placement assistance including those with limited English proficiency and disabilities. Maintains currency of knowledge and skills relating to the duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education and Experience
    The position requires an associates degree and one year of progressive experience in an employment or human resources office. Additional relevant experience may substitute for some post-secondary education.

    Requires basic knowledge of recruitment and employment techniques, methods, and procedures including those for reaching students and assuring equal employment opportunity. Requires basic knowledge of publicly funded job and training programs. Requires knowledge of the rules and regulations governing student employment. Requires a basic knowledge of the features of payroll, employee benefit plans, and job descriptions. Requires demonstrated skills at using a personal computer for word processing, tabulating data on spreadsheets, accessing and entering data onto relational databases and college information systems, verifying numerical and demographic information, and entering information onto established data entry screens. Requires sufficient math skills to compute sums, averages, products, and quotients. Requires sufficient human relation skills to convey private information, to give instructions and conduct interviews, and to facilitate discussions. Requires language, grammar, and writing skills to prepare professional correspondence, position advertisements, and informational brochures.


    Requires the ability to interpret the policies, procedures, techniques, and rules governing student employment and job placement at the College. Requires the ability to achieve harmony and cooperation in communications with others. Requires the ability to prepare professional correspondence for routine communications. Requires the ability to learn and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures for equal employment opportunity. Requires the ability to maintain up-to-date files and ensure security of private information. Requires the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.

    Physical Abilities
    The position incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires ambulatory ability to sit, often for long periods of time, and move to campus locations on an occasional basis. Requires the near visual acuity to read printed materials and microcomputer screen. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone. Requires the ability to retrieve work materials. Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, to keyboard at an acceptable rate and operate microcomputer, and other office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.

    Licenses and Certificates
    Requires a valid driver's license.

    Working Conditions
    Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

    Conditions of Employment

    This is a full-time, 12-calendar month categorically funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon funding and the provisions of the CSEA collective bargaining agreement.
    Hours of employment are:
    Monday through Friday. Hours to be determined by manager.

    Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.

    Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.

    Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.

    Effective January 3, 2022, Board Policy 2905 will require mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations. Through December 31, 2021, the District requires all employees to submit either proof of full vaccination against COVID-19, as defined by the CDC, or regular negative COVID-19 testing results.
