Responsibilities: The Department of Theatre at Purdue University is seeking an assistant professor with expertise in sound design for a tenure-track position beginning August 15, 2022.  We seek candidates with a background and/or interest in developing innovative, inclusive, diverse, and interdisciplinary curricula in the context of a liberal arts-based undergraduate theatre program and pre-professional graduate program in Theatre within a large, globally recognized STEM institution.

The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of two courses each semester in the Theatre BA, Sound for the Performing Arts BA, and Sound Design and Audio Technology MFA programs, to be determined based on departmental needs and the candidate’s area(s) of expertise, from the following: Sound Design, Audio Technology, Theatre Production, Production and Design Seminar, and Dance Sound Design, and may include designing for departmental productions, courses from a secondary design area, and other interdisciplinary courses.

We seek applicants who demonstrate a potential for ongoing, successful engagement with the highest standards of scholarship, teaching, and professional/creative activity consistent with the expectations for excellence in an AAU university. We are particularly interested in candidates with diverse expertise in more than one of the following areas: sound design and/or audio technology (required), a secondary design area (scenic, lighting, projection, costumes) and interdisciplinary teaching and research. The position requires mentoring and advising of undergraduates in the Sound for Performing Arts BA, serving as major professor to graduate students in the Sound Design and Audio Technology MFA programs, and committee and service assignments.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include a graduate degree (MFA) in Sound Design, Audio Technology or related design field or a PhD and professional experience, or an equivalent combination of teaching and professional experience. This position requires university-level teaching experience and an active record of creative professional work and/or scholarly activity related to the specialty area(s) of design; experience designing and teaching audio networking, digital signal processing systems, advanced digital audio workstation software, advanced theatre sound playback software, acoustic prediction software, acoustic measurement software, CAD drafting programs, and music composition.

Department: The Department of Theatre is one of four academic units (including Art & Design, Dance, and Music) in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. The Department of Theatre has 120 undergraduate theatre students (majors/concentrations/minors), 21 graduate students, 9 faculty, and 6 staff. The department houses the unique Sound for the Performing Arts BA which offers broad-based training for various careers related to sound for the performing arts. The Department is housed in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts.
