Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications seeks a professor to teach students in one of the preeminent Broadcast and Digital Journalism programs in the country. We invite applications for a full-time tenured position, beginning August 22, 20201. This is an open-rank search.

This position will support the Newhouse School’s goal of producing highly-skilled and ethical journalists who can work across multiple platforms in different roles for both traditional and innovative news organizations. Teaching students how to report on diverse communities is also a priority of the Newhouse School.

Candidates will indicate aptitude for teaching through prior university teaching experience. They will also demonstrate their ability to bring national visibility to the school through academic scholarship and/or creative activity. Specifically, top candidates for a tenured position will have already established a well-defined and ambitious research/creative agenda. Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess curiosity and the ability to learn new technologies as they keep up with the dynamism of the ever-changing industry.

Primary teaching responsibilities include courses required of all Broadcast & Digital Journalism
majors: cross-media news writing, audio reporting and newscast production, digital and social media content production, video reporting and newscast production. Additional courses may include data journalism and visualization as well as research method courses.

Tenured professors are expected to pursue such activities that will position them as a well-known expert in their field. Some financial support of these activities, such as membership in professional organizations and conference attendance, is available. Responsibilities
In addition to an academic year teaching load and pursuing a research/creative
agenda that brings national visibility to the School, this faculty member will also
engage in a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of
undergraduate and graduate students, school and university committee service,
departmental curriculum development and assessment, and community/industry
outreach.

About the Broadcast & Digital Journalism Department
The Broadcast & Digital Journalism Department ( BDJ ) at the Newhouse School is regarded as one of the top training grounds for broadcast and digital journalists. Newhouse BDJ alumni are employed at all levels of journalism organizations around the world. BDJ alumni help provide students with an employment pipeline into the professional world.

The BDJ faculty are a diverse group of journalists with extensive professional experience and varied academic research and creative interests. We are passionate about the goal of training the journalists of tomorrow. We require our students work very hard at developing their skills. This requires us to work just as hard to give them what they need. Teaching in BDJ is NOT a step into semi-retirement.

The BDJ faculty also practice “service after the sale,” by building professional connections to help students find first jobs and continue to consult on future career moves. We have an excellent track record in building the Newhouse BDJ alumni network.

The department has a close working relationship with a number of news organizations. For example, Nexstar Broadcasting Group is a partner with our Graduate Capstone experience in Washington, DC. BDJ students produce stories in our nation’s capital tailored for individual Nexstar stations around the country. Also, we partner with The E.W. Scripps Company on its innovative Scripps Journalism Career Program and supply students to both Hearst and TEGNA producer training programs.

activity can include, as examples, industry trade or consumer media/news articles,
and media production, development or multimedia storytelling (photo/video, film,
sound, web design, apps, scriptwriting). Please describe how your experience will
