Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Advancement team encourages applications for a Strategic Advisor to the Vice Chancellor of Advancement! The Strategic Advisor is a key member of CU Boulder’s Office of Advancement and serves under the direction of the Vice Chancellor for Advancement (VCA). This senior support role serves as a strategic advisor to the VCA and other key CU Boulder Advancement leadership, providing expertise on a wide range of projects and activities including Advancement operations, budget, human resources, organizational and team management, chancellor and president support, principal gifts, and other strategic activities.

Position must function with a landscape view of the entire division, a high degree of autonomy and exercise considerable discretion and judgment as a member of the CU Boulder Advancement leadership team. Position must be an innovative leader with strong management and interpersonal skills, with an eagerness to accept challenges and develop trust across CU and with a variety of internal and external constituencies.

This role also serves as a key liaison between CU Boulder Advancement and the CU System Advancement office, the CU Foundation, and the CU President’s Office.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves on the VCA’s leadership team, supporting key VCA initiatives, strategic efforts, decision-making, and policy development
  • Works closely with the Advancement division’s budget team, human resource professionals, leadership, and managers to track, monitor and ensure effective follow-through on action items specific to management of the division
  • Provides management and high-level oversight of the VCA’s support personnel, including hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, and workload management
  • Supports the VCA’s direct reports to ensure appropriate execution of initiatives, decisions, and action items
  • Maintains a commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion

Project Management
  • Supervises large, often cross-functional, organization-wide projects or initiatives, bringing together important partners and helping to drive decisions
  • Ensures timely and effective completion of projects and initiatives and proposes the creation of new systems and processes to streamline operations
  • Works closely with the leadership team to engage in strategy planning and annual goal setting
  • Helps define and monitor key performance indicators, including securing reports and dashboards as appropriate
  • Supports the creation and monitoring of the division’s strategic plan initiatives, including discussing project benchmarks with the leadership team and project leaders to analyze progress and make recommendations
  • Recommends new and revised policies and strategies to improve organizational efficiency and productivity, and ensures policies and strategies are implemented and followed
  • In close coordination with the principal gifts team, helps to facilitate strategy development, execution and follow-up with prospects assigned to the VCA or engaging with the chancellor
  • Leads projects that the VCA determines are priorities for the division and ensures projects taking place in the department align with the VCA’s overall vision and mission
  • Ensures the VCA's involvement in project or decision-making processes takes place at key times, where the VCA’s input and authority are most needed
  • Synthesizes project activities, progress, obstacles, and achievements into high-level reports for the VCA and leadership team
  • Provides regular briefings on the project portfolio, acts as a point of coordination on behalf of the executive, and recommends action to maintain momentum and achieve objectives
  • Supports ad-hoc committees and working groups to ensure accountability for established results and timeline

Vice Chancellor Support and Communication
  • Recommends and maintains senior leadership meeting agendas and priorities, tracks key topics and progress on decision-making and implementation
  • Recommends purpose, content, and focus for events such as all-staff meetings and leadership team meetings and retreats, including managing decisions on participation, presenters, and content to ensure alignment with VCA and division priorities
  • Working with executive assistant, evaluates requests for time to assess fit against organizational priorities
  • Keeps the VCA’s direct reports and other key leaders advised of day-to-day operational, and strategic issues
  • Prepares for and follows up on meetings, including with donors, the chancellor, the chancellor’s senior staff, the deans and vice chancellors, the system president and president’s senior staff, and key donors
  • Prepares the VCA for upcoming meetings by ensuring the VCA has all information necessary to be productive and engaged; joins key meetings, participates in debrief sessions, and assumes responsibility for appropriate action items
  • Supports close coordination of the drafting, timing, and delivery of division communications by the VCA and leadership team
  • Maintains an awareness of key issues and topics in industry and media, and supports communication of content to the VCA, leadership team, and others as appropriate
  • Stays informed regarding emerging trends and issues in higher education advancement and helps sustain a peer network to advise standard methodologies

Meeting and Event Preparation
  • Works closely with the VCA, Advancement leadership team, and VCA support staff to plan a variety of meetings to include the development of agendas, identification of meeting participants, and preparation and distribution of briefing materials (may delegate aspects of this responsibility)
  • In collaboration with VCA professional support staff, briefs and prepares the VCA in advance of calendared meetings and events (confirming objectives, researching issues, ensuring clarity of agenda, creation and submission of materials, and review of previous action items and decisions)
  • Responsible for tracking, monitoring and follow-up on projects, action items and strategies discussed or decided during meetings, including subsequent follow-up meetings and communications with key partners regarding outcomes and next steps

Liaison for CU System Advancement, CU Foundation, and CU President’s Office
  • Acts on behalf of the VCA to ensure collaboration with CU System Advancement, CU Foundation, and CU President’s Office
  • Supports relationships with campus and system leadership to ensure collaborative and timely communication regarding decisions that impact other CU campuses or specific schools, colleges, units, or programs
  • Serves as primary liaison to System Advancement divisions, including prospect development, prospect research, data and analytics, gift planning, annual giving, database, and IT support
  • Serves as primary liaison to the CU Foundation, including support for any Trustee nominations from the Boulder campus, strategy support for one Trustee board meeting each year, issue-specific support for gifts management and compliance, and additional ad-hoc projects
  • Serves as liaison to CU President’s Office, specifically regarding system-wide strategic plan, special projects, and multi-campus principal gift donor coordination
  • Provides strategic guidance and direction in identifying appropriate partners across the division for specific System and Foundation projects and initiatives

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $113,000 - $143,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 7 years working in a large/complex organization
  • 5 years working supporting/advising executive or senior level staff
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience working with multiple partners at various levels within an organization
