Position Summary

The academic advisor reports to the Interim Assistant Director of the Academic Advising Center & Career Services, and works as part of an advising team to primarily serve students who are undecided about their major and career options. This position will also advise some declared students in select departments. Responsibilities include working with students on academic planning, assist and assess academic needs and performance, planning and presenting outreach programs, developing educational materials, partnering with advising staff and faculty, assisting with training and mentoring of peer advisors and graduate students. On occasion, the adviser may work weekend and evening hours.

This is a 10 month position working September through June each year.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field required by start date.
• Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated expertise in using office software packages, email, and student record systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with college students on academic and career related concerns.
• Ability to prioritize and utilize good time management practices
• Ability to gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources.
• Ability to be thorough, consistent, and accurate in the interpretation of policies.
• Knowledge of UWL academic policies and procedures.

Academic Advising

Duties to Support Responsibility
  • Provide developmental advising to UWL students, assigned and unassigned students, who are in the process of exploring majors, minors, and potential careers as well as UWL students who are currently considering a change of major/minor resulting in the student’s ability to set personal goals, and to make intelligent educational, career, and life choices to achieve those goals.
  • Provide individual referrals to other UWL service offices.
  • Provide academic advising in group settings
  • Provide advising-related information to parents of UWL students.
  • Explain UWL General Education program and provide assistance to students.
  • Advise UWL students (individually and in groups) on issues related to professional & career planning (in workshops and other venues).
  • Advise UWL students on issues related to post-graduate education.
  • Attend Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and General Education Committee meetings and share updates with AAC Staff.
  • Serve as a liaison to a specific academic college/subject area.
  • Assist students with computer-based resources including career and academic exploration tools, online assessments and job search resources.
  • Participate in retention initiatives including early alert outreach, outreach to students in-between terms, and probation advising
