About the Algorithmic Justice League (AJL)

At the Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) we believe that social justice requires algorithmic justice. The AJL mission is to raise awareness about the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI), equip advocates with empirical research, build the voice and choice of the most impacted communities, and galvanize researchers, policy makers, and industry practitioners to mitigate AI harms and biases. Over the past few years, AJL has made significant contributions to the fight for algorithmic justice. AJL has garnered national and international attention as well as early support from the Ford Foundation and MacArthur Foundation, among others. 2021-2022 is a significant time for us, where we aim to grow from a small team of full time staff supported by contractors to a team of 10+ full time staff, and we have the fundraising plan to support our continued growth.

 

Position Summary

This leadership position is responsible for developing, executing, and assessing AJL’s organization-wide communications, media outreach, and narrative strategy. 

 

At AJL we take our mission seriously, but never take ourselves too seriously. We value creativity, collaboration, and joy. We are a small and mighty team with a rapid growth plan for 2021-22. 

This is a full-time regular position, and is overtime exempt. This is a remote position, with regular videoconferencing and shared virtual workspaces. 

What You’ll Do

    Oversee the integration of strategic communications, media, and public relations outreach efforts across the organization, including: 
      Lead communications, marketing, and outreach for AJL programs and initiatives both nationally and globally Design and deliver on media and publicity strategies for specific AJL programs and initiatives, ensuring optimal reach and impact  Proactively identify opportunities for placing articles, op-ed pieces, and letters to the appropriate channels Develop content and write communication pieces in support of AJL’s programs and initiatives  Work with current contractors to evolve the design, branding, and style guides for all of AJL’s communications materials and tools  Manage the calendar and workflow of communications.
    Produce and/or supervise the production of original written material in the form of reports, blog posts, press releases, internal notices and memos, social media posts, etc., as well as edit and proofread the writing of other contributors Develop and implement innovative media and public relations outreach strategies and initiatives that help move target audiences from awareness to action and sustained engagement with the AJL. Develop and maintain relationships with key communications and outreach partners, including editors, reporters, and communication leads in other organizations Take point on AJL’s digital assets, and ensure that AJL has the virtual and technological resources needed to achieve its communications vision  Assess the impact and ROI of all communications properties and activities, making adjustments as needed  Advance AJL’s desire for greater inclusivity, seeking opportunities to improve target audience relevance of AJL’s communications  Develop annual communications budget and track departmental spending  Grow, supervise, and lead the members of the communications team, including FTEs, consultants, partner agencies, freelance designers, and production vendors Supervise the management of our online “front desk,” coordinating AJL staff in responding to inquiries from members of our community, press/media outlets, policy makers,  researchers and academics, etc. Research and stay up to date on best practices in all of the areas described above, and continuously contribute to changes and adaptations. All employees of New Venture Fund are required to complete timesheets.

 

What We Hope You’ll Bring 

    A minimum of 10-15 years of communications experience, with at least 5-8 years as a Director leading the development, growth & execution of successful, comprehensive communications and outreach strategies.  Domain knowledge on AI, social implications of AI, AI policy & civil/human rights, and/or social implication of technology, technology policy, & civil/human rights Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing and building teams, and driving organizational Communications strategy Excellent oral, written, and public speaking skills  Strong media relationships  Experience in brand management and leveraging social media and digital platforms to create audience behavior change resulting is stronger relationships Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other staff to achieve goals  Proven demonstration of awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations  Work experience with public or nonprofit organizations Experience supporting and/or co-planning and implementing innovative digital fundraising strategies.  High level of comfort navigating a startup environment, including adeptness at managing multiple tasks effectively and working productively in a fast paced, deliberately growing organization. Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or French a plus
