Since 1993, the David M. Underwood Chapter of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) at the University of Houston (UH) has served as a Nonprofit Management Certificate and Credential Program available to undergraduate students from across degree programs. The NLA provides students the opportunity to become Certified Nonprofit Professionals (CNP) based on core competencies set by the national NLA, Inc. To date, over 400 individuals have earned this nationally recognized certification through the UH NLA program. The mission of the NLA is to strengthen the social network with a talented, prepared workforce.

The NLA program is housed under the UH Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) and supports the GCSW’s mission to prepare diverse leaders in practice and research to address complex challenges and achieve sustainable social, racial, economic, and political justice, locally and globally, through exceptional education, innovative research, and meaningful community engagement. Graduate students enrolled in the GCSW Master of Social Work (MSW) program are now also eligible to participate in the NLA program to earn their CNP certification as one of the GCSW’s Focused Learning Opportunities (FLO).

Manages the day-to-day operations of a small or medium-sized university program or department. May supervise staff employees, student workers, programs or processes.Job Duties

  1. Plans and develops procedures for administering a small or medium-sized department or program.
  2. Oversees program expenditures and ensures adherence to budget.
  3. Provides guidance to subordinate staff and evaluates performance.
  4. May prepare or participate in the creation of abstracts, research reports, funding proposals, operations and procedure manuals, and other written material and documentation.
  5. Reviews reports of budgets and activities. Prepares ad hoc reports as needed.
  6. May administer grants and grant-related related communications, scholarships and other operations.
  7. Develops, implements and maintains appropriate policies and procedures.
  8. May serve as property custodian for the department.
  9. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Additional Job Posting Information:

The NLA Program Manager is responsible for the day-to-day aspects of the program under the supervision of the Director of Innovative Academic Programs and Partnerships. This position is an integral part of the program with a unique opportunity to support students in their passion for making their community a better place. The goal of this position is to ensure that students in the NLA are provided the support, guidance, opportunities, and meaningful experiences needed to successfully complete the certification and prepare for a career in the nonprofit sector.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a liaison of the program across the university
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for students interested in the program
  • Guide and support students through the process of joining the program
  • Provide regular counseling and advising services to students in the program to ensure quality of the certification and student experience
  • Serve as the staff advisor to the NLA-AFP Student Association and provide support as needed (this student group also serves as the Houston Collegiate Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals)
  • Serve as the liaison between the program and university academic departments to integrate the certification requirements, ensure completion of required paperwork, and support student success
  • Serve as a liaison to nonprofit organizations that serve as internship placement sites for the program, as well as facilitate all required contracts and agreements between the program and these organizations
  • Facilitate day-to-day processes, including, but not limited to, the following:
    • Coordination and scheduling of events, workshops, and required activities for students (including the internship placement process)
    • Maintaining updated program schedules and materials
    • Meeting/event logistics
  • Ensure the coordination of appropriate records
In addition, the Program Manager will collaborate with the Director of Innovative Academic Programs and Partnerships to provide valuable input on and support for the following:
  • Planning and implementation of student recruitment and retention strategies
  • Development and implementation of policies needed to ensure program success
  • Planning, development, and administration of all aspects of interdisciplinary academic requirements to meet certification standards
  • Stewardship to previous and current funders, as well as overall fundraising and development initiatives in coordination with UH University Advancement
  • Program alumni relations
  • Collaboration with the NLA Leadership Circle, which serves as an advisory group for the program
  • Communication/marketing of the program and its role in the greater community to all audiences, including students, alumni, funders, and the nonprofit community
  • Ensuring that program activities, such as workshops, internships, and other required activities, provide students with meaningful experiences focused on the core competencies required by the NLA certification standards and that are in line with the GCSW mission of achieving social, racial, economic, and political justice, local to global
  • Any additional strategies that help further the program’s role as the premier nonprofit workforce development pipeline for the greater Houston area
Qualifications :

Bachelors and No experience

Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Experience: No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP)
  • Minimum of 1 year relevant experience in an academic or nonprofit setting
  • Fundraising/development experience, including in a volunteer/intern capacity
  • Experience in public affairs/communications/marketing/social media, including in a volunteer/intern capacity
  • Strong and effective interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Experience working with students and/or in a leadership position within a student-run organization
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with nonprofit/social services agencies
