Position Description
The undergraduate Physics program at the University of Washington, Bothell invites applications for a full time, 9-month faculty position at the level of tenure-track Assistant Professor. Housed within the Physical Sciences division of UW Bothell’s interdisciplinary School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the burgeoning Physics program seeks a new colleague to help develop innovative research and teaching portfolios in the areas of theoretical or computational condensed matter physics and to support our developing initiative in biotechnology. The successful candidate is expected to engage in modern pedagogy, involve students in undergraduate research, contribute meaningfully to UW Bothell’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and work enthusiastically in an inclusive and interdisciplinary culture of learning. The successful candidate will be expected to mentor a diverse population of students, and develop a strong research program that involves undergraduates . The successful candidate will also be expected to teach a variety of courses in the lower division and upper-division Physics curriculum. The undergraduate Physics degree at the University of Washington, Bothell is relatively new and offers an exceptional opportunity to help grow this program. Faculty in the Physical Sciences Division of the School of STEM possess strong teaching, research, and mentoring skills and enthusiastically support the participation of undergraduates in their research programs.
The School of STEM is the largest school at UW Bothell, and we remain committed to attracting diverse faculty and staff who create an exceptional student experience in support of our core values of COLLABORATION, OPPORTUNITY, RIGOR, and ENGAGEMENT. Our faculty are dynamic educators who engage in innovative, evidence-based pedagogies. Seventy-five percent of UW Bothell faculty engage students as research collaborators, and we continue to develop community and industry partnerships to expand internship, capstone, and collaborative research opportunities for students and faculty. We offer twenty-three undergraduate and graduate degrees and eight minors across four Divisions (Biological Sciences, Computing and Software Systems, Engineering and Mathematics, Physical Sciences). The School is housed in several buildings on a vibrant campus collocated on a restored 100-acre wetland with an active salmon stream, including the 74,000 square-foot Discovery Hall teaching and laboratory facility, with a new 77,000 square-foot STEM building in collaboration with Cascadia College opening in Fall 2023.

- A Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in physics or closely related field;
- Experience in modern teaching methods in physics, including teaching and mentoring of diverse populations of students;
- Demonstrated excellence in theoretical or computational condensed matter research and ability to develop a strong research program that can incorporate undergraduates.
- Teaching excellence: Demonstrates teaching competence and effective approaches to teaching; shows potential for high quality teaching.
- Research excellence: Demonstrates the ability to develop and sustain a research program engaging undergraduate students.
- Contributions to diversity and equal opportunity: Experience with and capacity for furthering UW Bothell’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Interdisciplinarity: Ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary STEM environment, across disciplinary interests.
- Service and collegiality: Evidence of willingness to work with others, be collaborative, and contribute to shared goals.
