Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Race and Colonialism in the Global South

Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time open rank faculty appointment working in the field of critical race studies broadly understood, and with an emphasis on the Global South, to be appointed in the Liberal Arts Program. We seek candidates with an active research program that focuses on constructions of race in non-Western contexts, and/or the impact of colonialism on social relations in the Global South. Preference given to scholars whose research is comparative or transnational, who investigate questions of anti-blackness in the non-Western world (particularly in the geographic regions of Asia and Africa, particularly the West Asia and North Africa region), who include gender in their analysis, and who have linguistic competence and field experience in their research area. Successful candidates will hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment, and could come from interdisciplinary backgrounds or from any discipline, including but not limited to anthropology, cultural studies, ethnic studies, history, media studies, political science, religious studies, sociology, social psychology. A profile at the intersection of race and infrastructure, the environment, and/or development would be a plus. Candidates are expected to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate education and program development.

In addition to a demonstrated research track record commensurate with rank, or highly promising research trajectory for emerging candidates, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance.  Responsibilities include teaching courses in their discipline and elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contributing to NU-Q’s curricular demands. These could include the required “Ways of Knowing” course, the Doha Seminar honors course, graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Middle East Studies, Media and Politics, and Africana Studies.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region; women; and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
