Position Summary
The University of North Texas College of Music announces a search
for two, tenure-track appointments as Assistant Professors in
Popular/Commercial Music in the College of Music. One of these
appointments is likely to reside in our Division of Jazz Studies
and the other will reside in our Division of Composition Studies.
These two appointments will be recruited with an ambition to
support a synergistic, collaborative, inter-divisional curriculum

for the wide variety of roles in the music profession they will
encounter upon graduation, as well as maintaining an active
creative/research agenda, and providing service within the College

and the Division of Composition Studies, our faculty are active and
experienced practitioners of their various crafts—composers,
performers, and scholars—who provide mentorship and opportunities
for our students to be successful and competitive in diverse styles
such as jazz, concert music, experimental music, electronic music,
popular music, music for media, and music production.
Teaching: duties include teaching courses in popular/commercial music, including songwriting and music production, and courses in the analysis and history of popular music; teach courses in music technology that will enable our students to achieve professional results in composition, recording, post-production, and notation with affordable software and equipment; recruiting and mentor excellent undergraduate and graduate students with interests in popular/commercial music.
Research/Creative Activities: (to include
commercial music projects, product development, publications,
recordings, broadcasts, commissions, conference presentations,
etc.)
Service Activities: (serving on
divisional/college/university committees; service to professional
organizations, etc.) commensurate with a tenure-track position in a
Carnegie Research 1 institution; and other duties as assigned by
the home Division and/or College.

Master’s degree in music or related field required; relevant
professional experience. A record of successful teaching and/or
mentorship at the collegiate level.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctoral or MFA degree; significant professional experience
relevant to the position description; extensive record of
successful university teaching; award-winning commercial-music
projects (recordings, compositions, film scores, game scores,
etc.).
