Associate Publicist

Books Marketing - Publicity Department is seeking anAssociate Publicist who will be trained to seek media coverage for Johns Hopkins University Press books and authors by devising and implementing publicity campaigns for 20-25 books per year, with a focus on specified professional titles and monographs. The position reports to the Publicity Manager.

The Associate Publicist will join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing the benefits of discovery to the world by providing global access, impact, and influence for the scholarship that we publish and distribute. This position will help to ensure that the Press is a leader in the selection and development of innovative ideas and scholarship; the creation of pioneering technologies to enhance discovery and learning; and the connection of people to the most trusted knowledge from global researchers, scholars, and educators.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works with publicity manager, marketing colleagues, editors, and authors to gain a complete understanding of assigned books. With the oversight of the publicity manager (or other senior publicity colleagues), will develop and begin to execute appropriate publicity campaigns, and to coordinate those efforts with the promotion efforts of other colleagues.
  • Actively participates in launch and positioning meetings to help shape Press list and promotional ideas.
  • Serves as the main marketing contact for authors. With guidance, will works closely with authors to gain their support of, and participation in, publicity efforts.
  • With guidance, develop timely and appropriate distribution of all press materials, including ARCs, digital galleys, proofs, and finished books.
  • Will learn how to follow up appropriately with book review editors, radio and TV producers, bloggers, and journalists who may be interested in covering books in reviews, interviews, news articles, or feature stories.
  • Schedules interviews and other book-related events and coordinates author travel.
  • Sustains an informed dialogue with members of the media (print, broadcast, and online) about new and upcoming titles of likely interest.
  • Facilitates creation and distribution of bound ARCs for the season.
  • Disseminates news of major forthcoming coverage to authors, colleagues, and to the sales team, as well as to key independent bookstores. Selects excerpts from reviews and enters them into press-wide database for timely use in promotion.
  • Will manage Press social media for Books, OR manage awards submissions for Books.
  • Occasionally called on to represent the Press at annual meetings of academic and professional associations, domestic sales conferences, and seasonal publicity calls.
  • Weaves equity, justice, and inclusion principles into all aspects of the work.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • At least three years of work experience, with at least two years in a junior-level communications or marketing role (Book publishing experience preferred).
  • Three additional years of work experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Stellar at all aspects of communication, with specific experience communicating effectively with the public and/or other demanding constituents.
  • Top-notch organizational skills; ability to handle competing demands from various sources.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, social media platforms.

  • Understanding of databases.
  • Superior problem-solving skills including using analytics to drive decisions.
  • Creative thinker; embracing new ideas; passionate about exploiting the potential of JHUP.
  • Excel in effective use of resources; keen self-awareness.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
