The University of Utah seeks a student-centered and dedicated professional to serve as the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Support & Accountability. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Associate Dean will serve as a significant partner in developing the mission and vision for the Office of the Dean of Students.  The role will also serve in a leadership capacity for the Associate Vice President & Dean of Student’s line of supervision.  The Associate Dean oversees the student support initiatives and student accountability processes that are outlined in the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.  The Associate Dean also serves as a key member of the departmental leadership team within the Division of Student Affairs. The Associate Dean has direct oversight of the Behavioral Intervention Team and their processes.  They will also work as the office’s liaison with Campus Safety in the creation and implementation of our campus Threat Assessment Team. This position will assist in providing leadership, training, support and guidance to members of the campus community in supporting students’ success and well-being.

COMPENSATION:             $95,000 - $110,000

 

WORK SCHEDULE:           40 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 8 am – 5pm, some nights and weekend work.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops, administers and revises as appropriate departmental policies and procedures and student conduct procedures and processes consistent with
  • University community standards, federal and state compliance regulations, and professional best practices.
  • Facilitates the appointment of hearing board members and provides leadership and training for staff, faculty, hearing boards, and others on appropriate resolution of student conduct matters.
  • Maintains student conduct records in accordance with all federal compliance guidelines and University policies and monitors and ensures compliance with federal and state laws including the Clery Act, Title IX, Campus SaVE Act, and Drug Free Schools.
  • Supervises the chair and serves as a member of the University’s Behavioral Intervention Team with administrative units to address and resolve issues including threat assessment strategies.
  • In coordination with the Chief Safety Office, serves as a member of the University’s Threat Assessment Team and remains current in best practices in that area.
  • Oversees communication with students, faculty, staff, parents/family members, attorneys and others regarding student support and accountability matters.
  • Serves as liaison to OEO/AA, UUPD, and Campus Safety in regard to situations involving student support and accountability.
  • Provides consultation and advocacy for students with questions, and/or concerns navigating institutional policy, procedures, and departmental processes.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with faculty, campus departments, and off- campus agencies to develop programs and procedures that promote student success and well-being.
  • Develops, implements, and analyzes assessment initiatives that foster student success.
  • Coordinates educational programming and outreach for the University community  including but not limited to new student orientation, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and other campus partners.
  • Prepares/oversees the preparation of departmental publications, statistical and annual reports.
  • Supervises professional (5) and graduate assistant (1) staff and is responsible for the strategic direction and daily operations of the office.
  • Represents the Office of the Dean of Students on University-wide and divisional committees as well as to external agencies as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency (1 year of college education is equivalent to 2 years of related work experience); eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration or related area, or equivalency; five years  of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, law, public administration, or related area or a Juris Doctorate
  • Evidence of progressive leadership in higher education administration
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student conduct, student records, and sexual misconduct adjudication
  • Understanding of best practices as it relates to Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment on University campuses
  • Ability to diplomatically handle difficult or urgent matters in a confident and proficient manner. 
  • Demonstration of strong interpersonal communication and relationship skills
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in a team environment while carrying out individualized work
  • Strong problem solving and oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment
  • Supervisory, assessment, and fiscal management experience
  • Familiarity with student conduct database software (“Advocate” is currently in use)
