Job Summary:

Position Summary:
The Department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking candidates for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level specializing in facility and controlled environments for agricultural systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a nationally recognized extension and research program supported by extramural funding. Extension and research topics for this position may include, but are not limited to the following:
-Design of dairy and livestock housing, handling and other components of animal production systems intended to optimize economic viability, production, animal well-being, environmental sustainability, and human health.
-Design of controlled environments for plant production that optimize economic viability, production, environmental sustainability, and human health.
-Development of solutions for problems related to environmental control and optimization within agricultural structures, processing, and storage facilities.
-Design and/or application of digital technologies, including sensors, wireless communications, control systems and software to improve animal and/or plant product quality, animal comfort, production economics, energy use/cost, water use efficiency, human health, and other critical factors.
-Identification and response to emerging issues in the field that present critical challenges pertaining to buildings and other facilities that are vital to agriculture; these challenges may involve addressing climate resilience, commercial adoption of new farm products (plant or animal based), and other such issues that will be identified and addressed through collaboration with extension colleagues and the industry partners.

This tenure-track position will be a nine-month Faculty appointment with tenure home in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the University of Wisconsin Madison. The position will be partially funded by the UW Division of Extension. The position carries a commitment to the three important functions of instruction, research, and outreach, as well as professional and university service as appropriate to the faculty rank.

Principal duties:
CALS Extension-funded faculty are expected to generate, translate, and apply research-based knowledge and methods to issues and problems by integrating research and educational activities into a coherent body of work. CALS Extension-funded faculty are expected to provide leadership in the design, development, and implementation of educational programs and to document the impact of these efforts.

Develop an externally funding research program and published in high-quality peer-reviewed journal

Develop an externally supported, nationally recognized, extension program that integrates research activities and is supported by competitive grants, industry contributions, and revenue from other programs

Contribute to the teaching mission of the department by teaching graduate and undergraduate courses. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students

Contribute to outreach and service functions of the department, college, university, and professional societies.

Contribute to programs aimed at increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the department, college, and university. Promote an inclusive and diverse climate within our campus and associated communities.

Education:

Ph.D. in engineering or a field closely related to the outlined extension and research program in this vacancy.

Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will also have research and outreach experience in animal and/or plant facility systems, preferably applied to agricultural or environmental systems.

Additional Information:

Candidates should demonstrate the capacity to undertake an interdisciplinary approach in their research and a willingness to work with other faculty members within the college and university. The candidate should also demonstrate the potential to develop, externally fund, and maintain an active extension and research program. The candidate should be able to contribute to courses in biological systems engineering and give evidence of a keen enthusiasm for mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide a level of extension program leadership that will effectively serve the needs of Wisconsin agriculture and facilitate collaboration with regional and national educational programs that focus on animal and/or plant facility design and environmental control.
