RESPONSIBILITIES:

Advising:

• Provide one-on-one student preparation and career advising both in-person and online, group career seminars and other related events such as career treks, to students interested in health professions (including medicine, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, dental, and veterinary school), natural sciences and pre-major/meta major pathways.

• Advise students on undergraduate prerequisites and scaffolding for entering health & natural sciences professions and graduate/professional school application processes.

• Guide students in researching and defining graduate and professional school options, identifying successful search strategies, developing a resume/CV, portfolio, personal statement, and interviewing skills.

• Provide assistance and resources on preparing for graduate level entrance exams such as the MCAT, DAT, VMCAS, etc.

• Participate in professional associations, health/natural science committees, etc. in order to maintain current best practices for planning undergraduate prerequisites, graduate level entrance exams, and overall graduate/professional school application processes within the heath/natural science professions.

• Partner with staff and faculty from the schools of Nursing & Health Studies and STEM, in addition to alumni, professional programs and employer partners, to provide opportunities for students to develop their job search skills, such as resume/cover letter development, networking and Handshake/LinkedIn profile development.

• Provide coaching in mock interviews for students applying to health/natural science programs/jobs. Conduct mock interviews in-person or virtually and provide guidance on content and delivery of interview responses.

• Research, update and maintain pre-health website with resources for students including shadowing opportunities, information about related programs, degree maps, meta-major pathways etc.

• Present in classes, workshops and seminars on relevant pre-health and natural sciences field preparation topics.

• Provide counsel to prospective students – communicate via email, telephone, video conference, and in-person visits.

• Advise relevant student clubs and organizations.

Administration, Recruitment & Retention:

• Collaborate with key curriculum committees (especially STEM and NHS) to identify important gaps in UWB curriculum needed to support retention and progress of health & natural science students.

• Collaborate with Academic Advisors to identify and address challenges for students’ academic/pre-professional progression.

• Manage pre-health shared email inbox and communication.

• Manage campus initiatives and activities regarding health & natural sciences career information.

• Keep abreast of market trends, industry shifts, program prerequisites and stakeholder interests; collect, assess and report data related to health & natural sciences professions.

• Partner with campus advisors, faculty and leadership to ensure that health & natural sciences students follow an appropriate course of study.

• Participate in first year orientation activities to provide information about health & natural science options.

• Attend professional association conferences, recruiting events, UW career group meetings, Student Affairs division meetings, advisor meetings, and other pre-health meetings as needed.

• Serve as the UWB liaison to and collaborate with health programs from UW Seattle health sciences and UW Seattle Career & Internship Center.

• Manage health & natural sciences monthly newsletter, connecting and informing students of relevant programming.

• Maintain electronic database to enter student information and track pre-health students embedded in other programs.

• Create reports on successful graduate school applicants.

• Assist with administrative tasks related to the smooth operation of the department.

• Other duties as assigned by supervisor

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years’ experience within higher education student advising, academic coaching or career counseling.
• Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to diversity and social justice.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Proven ability to function as a motivated, enthusiastic member of a team committed to providing excellent customer service.
• Demonstrated commitment to collaboratively working with students, faculty and staff individually and in groups in a positive, realistic and effective manner.
• Excellent organizational and group presentation skills/public speaking skills, both in-person and virtually.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
• Computer literacy including ability to develop web-based resources and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

• Master’s or Professional degree.
• Experience advising students on graduate and professional school applications/admissions procedures for health care/natural science programs, or related experience.
• Experience developing/implementing workshops or other programming aimed at supporting minority students/underserved populations.
• Experience in health care recruiting or talent development.
• Experience working with employer, industry, or professional degree program stakeholders.

Work Environment:

• The Natural Sciences & Pre-Health Professional Pathways Advisor is expected to attend major student activities and events held on campus and in the local community.
• The Natural Sciences & Pre-Health Professional Pathways Advisor has regular and frequent contact with students as well as faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners.
• A work schedule that fluctuates due to after-hours activities, meetings, and events is common.
• The position requires evening and weekend commitments throughout the year.
