Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
This position is responsible for providing academic advising to all new and returning BIS majors, conceptualizing and developing individualized programs of study for each new BIS student, and helping to coordinate recruitment and retention efforts for BIS students. In addition, the BIS advisor may on occasion be asked to teach a 3-credit course for the program, conditional on program needs. Finally, the BIS advisor will liaise with departments and programs across campus to secure course access for BIS students, and to stay abreast of new academic opportunities for interdisciplinary scholars. Minimum Hiring Standards
A minimum of one year of experience as an academic advisor in a college or university setting. Master’s degree from an accredited institution. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Exceptional attention to detail. Ability to prioritize responsibilities and stay organized during peak workflow times. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so at VCU .
