Position Function:

The Assistant Director of TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) is responsible for providing individualized personal, academic, career, and financial counseling/advising services low-income, first-generation students admitted into TRiO. The Assistant Director will also lead program initiatives, supervise full-time Program Coordinator for TRiO, conduct program assessment, and coordinate communication for the program.

Department Profile:

The Division of Access, Diversity and Inclusion (ADI) at Mississippi State University is comprised of 5 departments focused on ensuring that equity and inclusion is central to the decision-making processes. The Division provides institutional leadership on matters related to diversity, equity and access partnering across academic and non-academic units to foster an inclusive environment within the University. Support Programs encompasses 3 of ADI’s 5 departments: TRiO Student Support Services (SSS), THRIVE, and Promise. These departments provide support and resources for marginalized students experiencing any identity-based barriers to their success at MSU. The goals of the federally funded TRiO SSS program are to increase the retention, graduation, and transfer rates of limited-income and first-generation college students and students with disabilities. Through TRiO SSS, students receive individualized attention and support, with services including academic advising, financial aid assistance, one-on-one tutoring, instruction in basic study skills, transfer assistance, career development, personal support, mentoring, and experiential learning activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1.Assist the Director of TRiO Student Support Services with leadership, management, and strategic planning for TRiO SSS program.
2.Complete initial intakes and carry a caseload of students, which includes student case management, academic advising, transfer and career planning, financial aid assistance.
3.Oversee the development, recruitment, training, management, supervision, and evaluation of the TRiO SSS Tutoring Program.
4.Training and experience in developing learning strategies congruent with the needs of SSS participants.
5.Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
6.Track relevant and focused data to create reports and recommendations to Executive Director of Support Programs regarding student satisfaction, retention, and utility of TRiO programmatic initiatives.
7. Assist in identifying and implement methods to improve experience and resources of vulnerable student populations.
8. Assist in planning and implementation of major department events and projects, such as the TRiO Day Celebration, First Gen Scholars Celebration, and collaborative Support Programs initiatives.
9. Monitor and track the academic progress and performance of program participants through the college-wide early alert system and provide appropriate interventions.
10. Serve as a liaison to college faculty and staff for the purpose of referrals and gaining and disseminating needed information concerning students.
11. Develop and implement policies and procedures for targeted student population in support of the goals to retain and graduate these students. Ensure compliance with grant regulations according to the U.S. Department of Education policies for TRIO Programs.
12. Facilitate relationships with federal and state agencies, MSU faculty, participants, and community organizations to establish long term student retention and success of the program’s objectives.
13. Other duties as required or assigned related to meeting the needs of the SSS program.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Receives: Receives supervision from the Executive Director for Support Programs/Director of TRiO Student Support Services

Given: Full supervisory responsibility to professional staff, graduate students and undergraduate student employees

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education: Master’s degree
Focus: Field/discipline related to the position

Experience (yrs.)
3-5 years of TRiO experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing TRIO programs.
2. Experience working with disadvantaged groups
3. Must possess case management skills
4. Ability to manage co-curricular activities and/or academic support programs
5. Ability to analyze and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data
6. Prioritizes tasks and delegates effectively
7. Ability to lead high-impact initiatives from conception to implementation
8. Demonstrated ability to manage/coordinate multiple tasks
9. Independent, self-starter with strong work ethic
10. Excellent verbal and written skills
11. Excellent presentation skills
12. Ability to oversee and direct staff
13. Demonstrated strong commitment to the mission and vision for diversity, inclusion, equity and access

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
2. Frequent- External imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficulty to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotion issues or stress on a regular basis.
3. Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
4. Ability to occasionally work weekends and long hours.
