Overview

Saint Mary's College seeks to hire a per-course adjunct faculty member to teach KINES 117: Motor Learning and Control (1 credit course) in the traditional undergraduate Kinesiology program in Spring 2022.

TTh: 8:00-9:35 am

The Kinesiology major is a four-year course of study leading to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science depending on the student's area of interest. The major requires rigorous study of the human being in motion. We examine the whole person—anatomically, physiologically, biomechanically, psychologically, sociologically, and historically—across the lifespan. Our domains are health, sport, and physical activity. Students select one area within which to study: Sport and Recreation Management (Bachelor of Arts), Health Promotion (Bachelor of Arts), or Exercise Science (Bachelor of Science).

Consistent with Saint Mary's College's commitment to inclusive excellence, the Kinesiology Department strives to be an inclusive community that fosters respect and belonging for faculty and students of diverse backgrounds and identities. We seek an applicant who can engage, advocate for, and support students of color, women, and underrepresented groups.

This course will be taught in person, on campus.

Responsibilities

Motor Learning and Control introduces the foundations of human motor performance within the Exercise Science curriculum of the Kinesiology Department. This course provides a neuropsychological approach to the study of variables that influence human motor learning, performance, and motor control.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: express an understanding of the complex nature of human motor skills through written assignments and presentations; demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts and research in the field of motor learning/motor control; apply the known principles from the field of motor learning to a variety of self-selected teaching/learning environments in physical education, athletics and physical therapy; test selected motor learning principles by organizing laboratory sessions, collecting motor performance data, analyzing the data, and presenting the results in written laboratory reports; and design and implement a novel motor skill learning project, collect data on their performance, analyze the data, draw conclusions and present a description of their project.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will preferably hold a terminal degree in Kinesiology, or a closely related field. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level as evidenced by recent course evaluations is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable supporting and working in a multicultural environment.
