The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) in the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track permanent appointment at the rank of assistant professor [position number 0082913] to begin August 1, 2022, subject to position clearance and availability of funds. We seek highly qualified candidates with expertise in the areas of environmental and land-use planning. Candidates should have a broad understanding of current and emerging environmental and land-use issues, with strong expertise in research methods.

Duties and Responsibilities: 1) Develop a research agenda that strengthens DURP’s environmental and land-use planning streams and supports research in Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific region; 2) teach courses in the master’s and Ph.D. curricula and contribute to undergraduate curriculum development, supervise and mentor students; 3) teach and contribute to the development of the 4+1 Bachelor’s and Master’s pathway programs in environmental and land-use planning, and certificate programs; 4) publish research in peer-reviewed journals and seek extramural funding; 5) provide service to the department, college, and university. Other duties as assigned by the DURP chair.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in planning or a closely related field from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalent; ABDs will be considered only if all degree requirements will be met before August 1, 2022; ABDs must submit a letter from their committee chair attesting that the dissertation and all degree requirements will be completed prior to the date of hire; demonstrated research in one or more of these areas: the environment-land-use nexus, sustainable urban development, food systems planning, climate change adaptation, environmental and/or spatial justice; demonstrated ability to  teach courses on environmental and land-use planning.

Desirable qualifications: Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed research publications; demonstrated potential to generate extramural funding; ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and cross-cultural endeavors; research and/or professional experience in planning or planning-related fields in the Asia Pacific region; expertise in research methods: qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, or spatial analysis methods such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
