Position Description

The Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Washington (UW), School of Medicine, invites applications for two (2) full-time Assistant Professor (without tenure by reason of funding) positions in Medical Physics. The primary appointment location for these positions is at the University of Washington Medical Center (Seattle, WA). All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Appointments will be to full-time positions at an academic rank of Assistant Professor (without tenure by reason of funding) on the regular faculty track (either Clinician Scientist or Clinician Educator). The anticipated start date is approximately July 1, 2022. These positions have an annual service period (July 1 – June 30) with the salary paid over 12 months for 11 months of service.

Medical physics faculty at UW are committed to clinical service and patient care and demonstrate expertise in clinical medical physics while meeting the dual goals of clinical excellence and academic success. This position will advance our mission of clinical care, research, education, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The Department is dedicated to supporting the professional and career development of new faculty through a mentorship program and protected time one day per week for research and scholarship.  The Department offers administrative support by grant specialists and clinical trial coordinators. Department Overview
The Department of Radiation Oncology treats over 2,800 patients yearly from a multi-state region covering over 25% of the U.S. geographic area. The Department has 30 physician faculty, eight advanced practice providers, four research faculty, 26 medical physics faculty and staff, and four medical physics residents and ten physician residents.  The UW system offers a complement of state-of-the-art technology from major vendors for the planning and delivery of radiotherapy, including IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, SBRT, SRS, SBRT, SGRT, IORT, TBI, IVB, HDR and LDR brachytherapy,  GammaKnife, neutron, and proton therapy. The Department offers radiotherapy services at multiple sites of practice in addition to the main campus location and maintains clinical and research associations with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the region's only NCI-designated cancer center. The Department's current research focus areas include Precision Radiation Oncology (Image Guided Radiotherapy, Adaptive Radiotherapy, Biomedical Informatics, Radiation and Immune Modulation, RBE Optimization/Flash Particle Therapy) and Global Oncology/Health Equity. All faculty teach and mentor in the Department's ACGME-accredited and CAMPEP-accredited residency training programs. There are also opportunities for supervising students and post-doctoral fellows. 

Physics Overview
Physicists oversee technical implementation of patient care and play a key role in the Department's patient safety and quality control program. Our faculty has a diverse range of expertise and research interests in functional imaging, radiation biology, biomedical informatics, physics consults for patients, FLASH proton therapy, optimization, global oncology, and scholarship in education, including international research and education collaborations. Research facilities include a proton research beamline, SARRP small animal irradiator, and an active radiation biology lab. The physics group values team players, effective communicators, a service orientation, and a willingness to lead clinical projects of departmental need. Members of the physics group are active in national committees, outreach, and other volunteer contributions to the medical physics community through professional organizations such as the AAPM, SDAMPP, and ASTRO, on editorial and review boards, and examination committees.

The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in medical physics or a related field.  Candidates should have completed a structured clinical training program.
