Position Overview

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Employee Relations, Compensation & Benefits, the Compensation Manager will be responsible for leading the compensation function across the University. This will include analysis and evaluation of current compensation practices, as well as the development and implementation of new and revised compensation programs, policies, and procedures. The position will also be responsible for ensuring that compensation programs and policies are administered consistently throughout the University, and in compliance with internal policies and government regulation.
  • Develop, implement, and train leadership on compensation programs
  • Conduct analysis of current compensation programs/practices and recommend changes to ensure fair and equitable compensation policy that adheres to market trends and complies with government regulations.
  • Partner with leadership across the organization to provide guidance on pay decisions and policy interpretation, with a focus on the internal equity impact on positions throughout the University
  • Develop a merit pay matrix and provide training to managers throughout the University on how to effectively use the matrix to evaluate compensation for their employees
  • Develop techniques for compiling, preparing and presenting compensation data
  • Manage relationships with vendors providing compensation related services, and utilize these resources to supply market data on compensation to the University
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local compensation laws and regulations
  • Collaborate with benefits manager regarding Executive compensation and benefits
  • Support recruiting by providing compensation analysis of new and existing open positions
  • Provide support for managers regarding compensation changes for their employees, while demonstrating an understanding of the internal equity impact on other positions throughout the organization


Requirements/Skills/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in business, human resources or related field
  • 5 Years of progressively responsible experience in employee compensation.
  • Ability to use market data from a variety of sources to evaluate staff pay rates
  • Experience setting salary bands for a variety of positions
  • Experience creating merit pay matrices
  • Experience training managers on compensation related tools such as merit pay matrices and salary bands
  • Compensation management and/or HR related associate certifications a plus (CCP, CECP, PHR/SPHR, SHRM-CP)
  • Knowledge of all federal, state, and local regulations and compliance requirements related to employee compensation such as FLSA and worker's compensation laws. Familiarity with ERISA a plus
  • Experience evaluating compensation across complex organizations. Higher education experience a plus but not required
  • Strong expertise of Fair Labor Standards Act and ability to use that expertise to conduct analysis of salary and salary grades
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Workday experience preferred
