Description: Per course adjunct faculty for the Counseling program's course, COUN 308-01.

Qualifications:
COUN 308-01 - Addictions, Co-Occurring Disorders, and Recovery-Oriented Treatment

January 8, 22 and 29, 2022, Saturday, 9:00am - 1:15pm

This one-unit advanced course expands on the basic principles of substance abuse theory, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment introduced in COUN 237. The course addresses addiction issues from prevention to treatment and long-term care, with a special focus on the effects of substance use and abuse on populations at risk for addiction. Addictions such as eating disorders, compulsive overeating, gambling, online gaming, sexual addictions, and so on, are also discussed throughout the course. Key topics include assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of substance abuse disorders and addictions, as well as co-occurring disorders. Medical, legal, social, political and racial aspects of substance use issues are covered through readings and discussions, as well as course assignments. Current best practices, including the recovery-oriented systems of care (ROSC) approach to treatment, are presented; the importance of community resources, support systems/individuals, client advocacy, and multicultural competence are stressed.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have a M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field. Candidates must have experience teaching at the graduate level in Counseling, Psychology, or a related area, or at least 3 years of experience as a practicing clinician (e.g., MFT, PCC, clinical or counseling psychologist).

Preferred Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Counseling or Psychology is highly desirable. Current license in Marriage & Family Therapy, Professional Clinical Counseling, Social Work, Psychiatry or Psychology. Demonstrated experience with the provision of substance abuse and addictions education and/or treatment. A demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, multicultural/international competence, social justice, clinical expertise, and familiarity with counseling theory and practice.
