This role will lead the College's short-term and long-term BI project roadmap and implementation, be involved in hands-on development and test activities, and manage the team's everyday work. This is a key role in leading IT and business strategic initiatives through strong collaboration with internal IT teams and external business partners.

​Job Summary:

As a member of the IT Enterprise Systems team at Emerson College, the Director of Business Intelligence and Operation partners and collaborates with business departments acts as a subject matter expert in Student and Academic spaces to deliver Banner and Ellucian products technical and operational support and provides reporting and data analytics services to business and administration across the College.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Enterprise Systems, the position will lead a team of four IT staff members including Database Administer, Business Intelligence Specialist, and Application Administrator to provide superior operational support to Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, and Campus Life, as well as service expansion in areas of user experience, data management, DR practice, and technological offering.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Participate with the IT Leadership team in the development of Emerson IT strategies focusing on functional expansion, user experience, and process improvement in areas of Business Intelligence, Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, and Campus Life, and develop goals and plans to execute them.
  • Lead and actively participate in the multi-year Business Intelligent/Reporting projects, acting as a business partner, and frequently as a technical leader or SME of business functions to ensure operational dashboard/report and Institutional metrics meet business and executive requirements.
  • Work with DBAs to maintain the Enterprise Systems' Banner technical infrastructure diagram, server inventory, and password accuracy to keep information up-to-date.
  • Create clear procedures, instructions, or guidelines to establish a standard pool of issue solutions for cross-team support. Seek opportunities to standardize and optimize the support processes.
  • Research and keep close contact with Ellucian's development roadmap, new product releases, enhancements, bug fixes, and technological trends to apply upgrades or adopt new features in a timely manner. Provide UAT plan and quality control of upgrades. Develop training materials or guidelines for new service delivery.
  • Collaborate and coordinate software upgrades and migration schedules with business users and IT Communication Team.
  • Organize and lead internal staff and external business user meetings with clear meeting agendas, thoughtful planning, and follow-ups.
  • Manage and prioritize DBA resources, database, and server operational tasks to make sure backup, Oracle and data security, change management, and security auditing practices are strictly followed and up to standard.
  • Keep a breath of Ellucian and relevant solution providers' new technology trends in students, academic, and advising landscape that can potentially improve the current use of technology or workflow. This includes but is not limited to Degree Works, Canvas, Slate, Raiser's Edge, Automics and BDMS, API integration, and data synchronization between systems.
  • Effectively translate and document business process and functional requirements into technical specifications through visualization and other best of the breed tools. Function as BSA to write project proposals or develop cases as needed.
  • Manage business partner expectations by negotiating the needs and expectations within the context of Emerson's strategic goals and operational efficiency.
  • Manage internal and external resources to ensure successful project delivery. Build and manage the BI and Operation staff to actively support the IT strategic goals while balancing with operational support quality.
  • Coordinate with business to continue to implement data, process, and report specifications in the Data Cookbook. Promote data governance and data standard practices among the user community.
  • Resolve system issues in coordination with business users and other stakeholders. Engage appropriate SMEs as needed to drive resolution to incidents and document problems.
  • Effectively work and collaborate with PMO. Lead and manage projects as assigned.


Your Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience supporting Student Information System, or Business Intelligence in Higher Ed institutions.
  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or degrees in other fields of study combined with work experiences and education
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience supporting Banner for Student, Faculty, and Financial Aid modules. Solid Banner functional and data knowledge.
  • Strong management and team development skills.
  • Solid technical background working with Oracle, SQL, Tomcat, Ethos, API, Banner Extensibility, and Banner Security Module.
  • Familiar with Groovy/Gail development and Banner 9 customization platform.
  • Strong Business Systems Analyst skills, ability to document business processes, write project proposals and develop cases.
  • Experience with cloud and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) delivery models.
  • Experience working with 3rd party vendors or consultants.
  • Strong knowledge of IT security, data security, and data governance process.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work creatively and analytically to solve business problems under high-stress and exhibit poise and focus, self-starter, and pay attention to details.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills, multi-tasking in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Skilled in project management and familiar with project management general concepts and practices.


You'll Be Preferred With:
  • Strong Argos Datablock and OLAP development experience or advanced BI/Data Warehouse development experience using industry-leading tools.
  • Experience in leading large-scale BI implementation projects.
  • Previous experience in a leadership role managing IT and Banner operations and Business Intelligence.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

Hiring Range: $107,700.00 - $113,300.00
