Job Description

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering [MSE] at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a collegiate faculty member at the assistant or associate level. This is a non-tenure track, academic year position, renewable after 3 (assistant-level) or 5 (associate-level) years. The primary responsibility of this position will be undergraduate instruction and course development, especially for laboratory courses. Other specific duties will include assistance with management of the department’s common-use laboratories, maintenance of equipment and instrumentation, and support for the MSE senior capstone program. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research and scholarship.

The department currently has 16 faculty members, and is home to over 175 undergraduate and 65 graduate students. In Spring 2022, the department will move into the newly renovated Holden Hall, which has been expanded to approximately 100,000 square feet, shared with Mining and Mineral Engineering. Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related field at time of appointment, a strong record of academic or professional accomplishments and a proven ability to work collaboratively; experience with, and commitment to, interdisciplinary scholarship and instruction and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.

An ability to communicate effectively both the theoretical and practical aspects of MSE across disciplinary subfields is essential. A strong background in laboratory or industrial safety, experience with a wide range of materials processing and characterization techniques, and mechanical and electrical repair skills are preferred. There is no expectation for the development of an independent research program.
