The Urology Department is seeking a Research Specialist who will be responsible for generating, maintaining, and characterizing human bladder cancer organoids. “Organoids” are cultures of primary human tumors that are being developed by members of the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute (GBCI). Organoids retain key aspects of human cancer cell biology better than other available laboratory models do. The position requires performing experiments in immunodeficient mice. The Research Specialist will also be responsible for routine laboratory maintenance.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Organoid cultures
  • Coordinate clinic-to-research specimen handoff
  • Prepare, maintain, expand, and cryopreserve human organoid cultures
  • Maintain specimen inventory
  • Perform RNA and DNA sequencing
  • Perform functional studies ex vivo
  • Generate and characterize conventional and organoid-based patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models in mice
  • Oversee day-to-day data collection for research study(ies) in support of a PI, postdoc, research or administrative staff.
  • Maintain adequate supply of lab materials and chemicals by routinely checking stock and ordering supplies when needed.
  • Coordinate with equipment techs from companies for maintenance and service on lab equipment.
  • Keep the lab up to code with safety regulations for annual safety inspections.
  • Provide technical support for experiments done by members of the GBCI.

  • Isolation from tissue, FFPE, urine, blood
  • Library prep and qPCR
  • Sequencing
  • Bright field and fluorescence imaging
  • Analyze data with computer software (R, GraphPad Prism, ImageJ)
  • Summarize research progress in manuscript and presentation format for multiple weekly meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field
    • 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques
    • Master’s Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Proficient with sterile cell culture techniques

    Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

      Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing Has excellent oral and written communication skills Has strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills Excellent attention to detail Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and effectively prioritize each Has basic knowledge of medical terminology

    Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

    • Familiar with basic molecular biological techniques (i.e., DNA and RNA isolation, quantitative real-time RT-PCR, protein isolation and characterization)
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office software suite

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time
    • Reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction
    • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than whole hand(s) or arm(s)
    • Ability to move standard equipment through laboratory environment
    • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 25 lbs

    JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
