Basic Function:
This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada, and more importantly, focuses on the development of basic conversation skills emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in-class and out-of class requirements.

Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level. Describe and demonstrate American Sign Language classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement. Compose ASL Gloss translation from English. Explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf. Examine and show an understanding of history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.

This assignment may include teaching at other campus sites, day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning and multiple teaching methodologies.
Other duties include:
  • particiption in student recruitment and articulation of transfer programs for the history department;
  • maintaining subject matter currency;
  • developing and revising curriculum;
  • using computer and multimedia technology;
  • collegial participation in departmental, college and discipline-specific professional activities.


Education and Experience:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Bachelor degree and 2 years related professional experience OR Associate degree and 6 years related professional experience.

- A demonstrated sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities.
