The Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) invites applications for a Researcher 6 position
to conduct research and evaluation projects. The projects provide consultation and collaborative services that cover a
broad range of education topics for non-profits, educational institutions, government, and faculty collaborations.

The Research Associate will be expected to conduct evaluation activities. These activities involve developing multiple
data collection instruments, conducting data collection and analysis, and report writing.  The successful applicant will
assist with hiring and overseeing the work of consultants for projects. In addition, the candidate will be expected to
interact with a variety of stakeholders to acquire and interpret student data. Finally, the successful applicant will have
the ability to design and implement evaluation designs.

The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise and experience in the field of research and evaluation as well as
experience in working in school districts and school settings. The candidate must be highly organized and skilled in
verbal and written communication, and will have the ability to work independently and make decisions within a project. This position will report directly to the Associate Director for Evaluation Services

This position will manage project design, project resources, project personnel effort, project timeline, and project
deliverables for multiple research and evaluation projects for CAREI clients.  Project contracts vary in form, and are
either: 1) External Sales contracts with school districts, non-profit organizations, higher education institutions, or
community organizations, 2) Internal Sales contracts with other University of Minnesota Departments or faculty, or 3)
Sponsored Projects with federal granting agencies. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of the research
methodologies that are used in the field of evaluation.

The primary purpose of the CAREI Researcher 6’s work is to improve the quality of education for all learners. To achieve that purpose, the Researcher 6 must assist with neutral and rigorous educational research and evaluation projects. This position will be responsible for handling a variety of assigned complex research and evaluation related projects. The position requires an in-depth level of knowledge in the application of research methodologies used in the field of evaluation.

This is a 100 % time, 12-month academic professional position on an annually renewable contract. Annual renewals are subject to a successful performance review and availability of funds. Job Responsibilities

Conduct Research and Evaluation (60%)
● Provide expertise to clients on appropriate approaches to use for conducting research and evaluation to inform
decision making.
● Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses of data collected for research/evaluation projects.
● Prepare written and oral reports of research and evaluation results.
● Lead research/evaluation teams in the preparation of reports.

 

Design Research and Data Collection Instruments (20%)
● Design research and evaluation plans to meet the information needs of school districts, non-profit organizations,
higher education institutions, and community organizations
● Work with clients to develop research based proposals for grants and research/evaluation projects including
logic models, methods designs, and literature reviews
● Develop qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments including interview protocols, focus group
protocols, surveys, rating scales, and observations to answer the research/evaluation questions specific to
projects

 

Coordinate and Supervise Project Personnel (20%)
● Serve as project lead for multiple research and evaluation projects
● Serve as point person for communication with clients on projects
● Oversee and coordinate project staff and graduate students in the completion of projects
● Ensure the implementation of research/and evaluation plans by following timelines and producing products and
deliverables
● Manage budgets and effort for all personnel assigned to projects

QUALIFICATIONS


Required Qualifications
● Advanced degree in an Education, Psychology, Leadership, Evaluation or related field with research and
publication record
● Demonstrated experience leading and/or conducting research and evaluation involving students, teachers,
parents, and/or administration in school or social service settings using


Preferred Qualifications
● Experience in developing research and evaluation plans and addressing highly complex methodology and
implementation challenges through the design of protocols, policies, procedures.
● Experience in conducting field-based research in local educational agencies (LEAs), and schools using mixed
approaches including quantitative and qualitative methodologies to research and evaluate programs and
policies.
● Experience or interest in National Science Foundation projects
● Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities,
backgrounds, and identities
● Ability to work independently, as well as serve on a research team, to make decisions to keep processes moving forward.
