Title: Asian American Studies - Assistant Professor

Status: Tenure Track

The Department of Anthropology seeks to fill a tenure-track position with expertise in the Asian American communities of the United States. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and offer courses in Asian American Studies. The candidate must possess knowledge and research experience in one or more Asian American communities, and the ability to contribute to building a standalone Asian American Studies major and program. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience, an applied/practicing orientation (e.g. public policy), a research focus on education and/or health, and a willingness to pursue research and involvement with the Central Valley’s Asian American communities. A key factor in the position will be a willingness to collaboratively build the Asian American Studies program at Fresno State.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):

An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Ethnic Studies, Asian American Studies, Sociology or a closely-related social science discipline (such as Anthropology); accompanied by evidence of sustained research with and expertise on API communities; or, an Ed.D. accompanied by evidence of sustained research on the educational successes and barriers faced by AAPI communities.

Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For an appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (08/2022).

Required Experience:

Must demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Demonstrated record of research and community involvement with one or more Asian American communities.

Experience, interests, and knowledge that would enable them to develop and offer courses in Asian American Studies and to build on the existing Asian American Studies program.

Preferred Experience :

Teaching experience at the university level and a record of teaching excellence

Applied/practicing orientation (e.g. public policy)

A research focus on educational attainment among AAPI communities (including structural, policy, and other barriers), or research experience in the sociology of Asian American health and family, and a willingness to pursue research and involvement with the Central Valley’s Asian American communities

Research and practice involving Southeast Asian Americans, in particular, is valuable.

Formal training in writing and writing instruction is also valued.

About the College and Department:

The Department of Anthropology at California State University, Fresno is the home department for this hire. The department currently offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, a Minor in Asian American Studies, and two Certificate programs; a certificate in Southeast Asian Studies and a certificate in Asians in Secondary Education. The Asian American faculty within the Department have a strong applied/practicing orientation, and we offer a full range of academic courses through the Asian American Studies Minor such as Introduction to Asian America, Health, Education, Hmong, Lao, Cambodian American Experience, and a writing course called Asian Eats.

We involve our students in research to enrich our lives as scholars and to promote our students’ academic success. The Asian American Studies Program has a four-decade history in the Department and is a valued part of the Department and University. The Fresno State student body is over 15% Asian American and Pacific Islander and our AAPI students lead many vibrant and active student organizations. The campus also has an active Asian Faculty and Staff Association and a Cross-Cultural and Gender Center. Our campus is actively engaged in efforts to ensure the success of students from all backgrounds and participates in the CSU system’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Initiative.

Set in the richly diverse Central San Joaquin Valley, Fresno’s population of about 500,000 is 13% Asian American and Pacific Islander, with a significant presence of people with Hmong, Asian Indian, Lao, Cambodian, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Native Hawaiian, Guamanian and Samoan heritage. The Central Valley has played a crucial role in the history of immigration from Asia to the United States, including the arrival of people displaced by the wars in Indochina. Fresno is about two and a half hours by car from the Bay Area and about three and a half hours from the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
