Position Details
The Physical Plant team is responsible for operations and maintenance of Wesleyan buildings and grounds. The team includes skilled tradespeople who maintain and repair campus buildings and associated equipment.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Building Trades and with oversight from the Lock shop Foreperson the Locksmith is responsible for performing highly skilled locksmith duties.

Responsibilities include

  • Install, repair and maintain commercial lockable hardware such as doors, keyways, latches, automatic electric door, windows, lockers and magnetic keying systems to ensure safety of facilities.
  • Administer the University’s key system according to established controls, preserving the integrity of the system while meeting customer requests
  • Re-pin, change and replace various types of locks
  • Repair door frames, door jambs and openings as needed
  • Make keys and maintain associated equipment
  • Circumvent, remove and restore compromised locking systems
  • First call and troubleshooting of door and security system failures.
  • Repairs security access control systems including electronic locks
  • Maintain familiarity with industry standards and recent technology
  • Participate in overtime and call-in assignments on a frequent basis.
  • Perform other duties as required

Working Conditions:
Physical Demands/Working Conditions include Balancing, Climbing, Carrying, Pulling/Pushing, Reaching, Repetitive Movement, Sitting, Standing, Twisting, Bending, Lifting (50-100 lbs.), Climbing ladders, and working from platforms and heights as needed, with or without reasonable accommodations.

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, and is in the physical plant bargaining unit. Typical work hours are Monday – Friday 7:30 am – 4:30 pm with 1 hour lunch break

This position may be required to work frequent overtime shifts which may include returning to work between shifts, nights, holidays and weekends as directed.

This position is classified as essential personnel and as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.


Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of four (4) years of experience in locksmithing. including Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in locksmithing.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the locksmith trade
Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records
Working knowledge of applicable local, state and national building codes and other regulations applicable to area of responsibility.
Proper use of personal protective equipment related to trade.
Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets and proper waste disposal methods.
Proper application of Lockout Tag out, confined space, and other safety procedures.
Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and build to blueprints, drawings and specifications.
Effective communication skills.
Demonstrated history of satisfied customer service competencies and customer follow-up. Desktop computer skills including the fundamental use of internet, e-mail and maintenance management systems.
Possession and continuous maintenance of valid State of Connecticut driver’s license and safe driving skills.
Ability to meet work conditions and physical demands on a continuous basis.

Minimum Qualifications-Substitutions Allowed:

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in carpentry may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
Experience performing technical duties within the carpentry trade are on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
Advance knowledge or certification in the locksmith trade.
